Hunter gently guided me to the couch, brushing a strand of hair from my face just like nothing had happened in between us.

"I know it's a lot to take in but please just listen to us first okay?" Hayden said sitting by me, a little too close for comfort but I couldn't complain much.

"I'm the leader, or Alpha here at the Chanyana Pack" Hunter started. Seeing the look on my face he sighed heavily. "Have you ever heard of werewolves Nola?"

"Mythical creatures" I trailed off, looking into their faces told me everything I needed to know.

"Which I'm guessing you're about to tell me they aren't so mythical."

"I know it's hard"

"Yeah you've said that" I grumbled under my breath.

"Well anyways we have a pack order here in the community. I'm the first in command, then Hayden here is Beta, then Eli is third in command he is the head sentinel, kinda like the third in command."

"Why did you get chosen to lead" not realizing afterwards that it sounded kind of snooty.

"By heirs. Generations have passed in my bloodline that have ruled. Hayden declined the offer, but if he wanted to be Alpha he would have to challenge me." I looked over to Hayden to see him studying my face already, a serious look adorned on his face. I zoned out only half hearing Hunter explain the rest, something about only men in the pack having the werewolf gene, never any girl.

"So basically girls are only baby making machines" I said, snapping back into attention. Hunter let out a laugh and shook his head.

"No, the females are greatly cherished in our pack. Each male is destined to meet their mate, a mate is basically somebody that the universe decided to match the couple. A mate is cherished by the wolves. It's a sacred bond that should never be broken. Though they do produce the heirs each women is given the important role in giving guidance to the mate. When a wolf passes their mate takes over their role, until the mate decides to pass it on to the next in line if she sees fit or a heir is old enough to take over."

"How do you know" I asked, my mind trying to think less of this as some story then as real life.

"It's different for some wolves. Some need physical contact, some just need a glance into the eyes. Others don't even know until something forces them to be together. Most male wolves know right away though, it's just an instinct." he glanced at Hayden out of the corner of the eyes. "A male wolf marks his territory"

"What do you mean?" My hand indistinctly brushed over the bite mark.

"You know." he sighed staring straight at my side. "Each wolf has a unique bite and to mark their mates they bite and scar them to claim ownership on them."

"So this is?" I lifted up my shirt slightly, tracing the mark. "Who"

"It's not my job to say" He stared straight at Hayden.

"Hayden?" I asked.

"It was a mistake. I was too young to understand what I was doing." he muttered before storming out of the room. From some odd reason those words went straight through me, filling my body with an empty feeling. Tears welled in my eyes.

"I really don't understand him" I muttered.

"He's had a tough time, but if you want I can tell you what happened. I doubt he will any time soon"

"What happen all those years ago, why didn't he stick around when he bit me?" I asked.

"First you have to understand the beginning. I found my mate at the age of 8. Her name was Allie" he said "my father required my brother and I to go to public human school in order to learn more about the culture. My mate didn't know that we were werewolves. At age 16 my dad was going to pull us out of school so we could start training to become a leader, alphas, and warriors. I was heartbroken so I told Hayden that I was going to tell her everything." Hunter caught his breath before continuing.

"Hayden was really close with her to, sometimes a twin will fall in love with their twin's mate. I think Hayden loved Allie to, so he came with me. We met in a forest where Hayden and I could shift with ease. When we were out there something happened during the shift, Hayden lost control." I let out a gasp and put a hand to my lips.

"He didn't mean to kill her. Something just triggered his wolf and he got possessive of her. When I was going to mark her he tried to throw me off but just ended up pushing her to hard. She hit her head. She died 5 years ago after spending a few months in coma. It was a hard time for all of us." He sighed. "That's kinda what happened with you. It was the day that she died. Hayden was going on a run, he wasn't in his right mind. When he saw you, he felt comforted, but then I came and he seemed to feel threatened. Before he could think it through, his instincts took over and he marked you."

"I think this is all I can handle right now" I said getting up from my seat. Hunter nodded in understanding before patting my head.

"As long as you understand one other thing. I like you, I really do Nola. But you aren't mine to cherish. That's why we can't be together. I can't hurt my brother like that." and he let me go. I made my way to my room and threw myself on the bed.

My mind was racing trying to collect any thoughts running wild. They seemed to swirl in my head, causing a slight pound in my head. My hands clutched the book I got from the library earlier, holding it to my chest, as if it would give me all the answers that my heart needed.

Deciding to take action, I opened the book flipping through to the first chapter.

The Chanyana tribe lived many years in prosper. It's members all lived in tranquility, until one night the tribe from Hónehe broke the treaty, attacking the smaller tribe and demolishing most of its prized warriors, and the head of the tribe, Abahay. Forced to take action the women of the tribe prayed to the ancestors for a warrior strong enough to protect the tribe.

Later on the Hónehe tribe attacked again, this time to kill all women and children. Their prayers were answered in the form of wolves. The wolves helped protect the tribe, scaring away any threats of Hónehe warriors.

As tradition goes the women of the tribe would give up sacrifices. 12 women were pregnant at that time, and it was decided that the males would be sacrificed to the wolves. 6 women gave birth to males that season, one birthing identical male boys.

They gave the boys up, and the ancestors blessed the boys with the power to communicate with the wolves, learning how to fight for the tribe. Every full moon forced to turn into a creature of the ancestors, the wolves. Many tribes have tapped into this power, forming a connection with the ancestors. Some wolves, others many different creatures.

Generations passed and the gene has been passed down to every male with tribe blood. The original 7 teaching the way each generation. The ability to shifted at will has been learned as well has other abilities depending on the shifter.

The page ended there, and the next chapter presumed but I was too lazy to read, information filling up my head. I laid down in the comfort of my bed. Letting my eyes fall closed, but too much was in my head for me to fall asleep.

The door creaked open, and I kept my eyes closed not wanting to deal with people. I heard him sigh, standing there looking at me before closing the door behind him, and I let him go.
