12 • First Day
I stand beside Grayson, both of us not saying a word as we wait for the children to arrive. We had set up everything and now we're simply a couple minutes away from the kids being let out of the quick talk with John.
During the whole set up process I was forced to place out everything while Grayson just commanded me around. I mean, he was ticking things off of a clipboard but he could've helped. So now I pretty much feel as though I am tired before we have even started.
As I hear the door open I know that hell is about to start. All the kids come running around the building to meet in a small opening behind it. There was a sign behind the building titled kids meeting area and then there was a small path that went amongst some trees that led to the ball field.
A couple of kids run out screaming causing me to roll my eyes but once they all assemble outside there were eleven beady eyes staring my way.
"Welcome to Ikaia Resort! My name is Grayson and this is my colleague Clarke and we will be running the program for the month or week or however long you are going to be coming to us!" I roll my eyes at his speech already hating this. How could my mother be so cruel? Couldn't she let me work at a nightclub, or a bar? Not with fucking children.
"Clarke you want to introduce yourself," Grayson turns to me and I send him a small glare. He had to be one of those people didn't he. Has to drag me into the spotlight.
"I think you did a good enough job!" I retort, not even making eye contact with him or the kids.
"Alright, you guys want to play some soccer!" Grayson exclaims excitedly and all the kids cheer as they follow Grayson down the path. I wait for all the kids to lead in front of me and then I lead down the path in succession.
We get to the pitch fairly quickly and all the kids gasp in awe as if they have never seen a soccer pitch before. I sigh before walking to the front of the pack with Grayson.
"Alright, we need to begin by learning everybody's names so let's start with a simple game. I am going to be throwing the ball at someone and you need to call out your name before throwing it to the next person," he grabs up one of the balls from the netted bag and he throws it over to me. I clumsily drop the ball and watch it roll away for a couple metres but I abruptly strut over and I pick it up.
"Coulda warned me," I mutter under my breath before looking back up at Grayson.
"Just like this!" Grayson looks over at me expecting me to throw the ball so I lightly throw it up and he catches it and says his name afterwards.
"It's that easy! Who is ready to play?" Grayson chimes and all the kids, who are around nine or ten years old chime up in a loud roar. That could definitely get annoying.
I look up to see Grayson thrown the ball to a girl, "Grayson!"
The girl then throws it off to a boy a couple of people beside her, "Maddison!"
The boy then throws it to another girl, "Emile!"
The girl then tosses it, pathetically, over to me, "Emma!"
I grab the ball firmly this time and I look up and throw it to the smallest girl in the circle who may be the only one I liked. She was cute and quiet, it's like a bonus!
"Clarke," I mumble as I throw it off to her and she almost catches it but it rolls out her arms. As she runs off to get it Grayson leans in towards me.
"Less aggressive," he mumbles as I roll my eyes. Less aggressive my arse! That was the lightest throw of all time, it practically didn't even make it to her. I sigh as the game continues for five minutes too long.
