Chapter One
Memories came crashing down on her like a hurricane on the East Coast. In her mind she could see Sonic, the Freedom Fighters, the Chaotix, Shadow and Rouge...everyone she'd met while on Mobius. Her eyes were clearly seeing Doctor Eggman, but her head refused to believe it. No wonder these guys knew about the Chaos Emerald. He must have told them all about it, and her. How in the world does he keep finding me? He's got to be messing with history by doing this all the time.
Kay shook her head. "This is impossible."
"On the contrary, my dear," the doctor grinned. "You didn't think I was through with you, did you?"
"You're insane," she spat.
"No, no." He waved his hand as if shooing a fly. "I've done my time with insanity. Nasty disease. But you took my Chaos Emerald, and that's going a bit too far. You already broke my roboticizer."
Anger flared within her. Kay took a step forward and yelled, "It is not your Chaos Emerald!"
"It's not yours, either," he replied calmly.
"Better in my hands than yours, Eggman."
At this point Karai cleared her throat and stepped forward slowly. "Do not forget, you lost our duel. You must give him the Emerald as promised."
"Oh-ho! A promise, eh?" Eggman laughed heartily.
Kay turned to look at Karai with horror. When I made that wager I knew I'd be losing to her, but to lose to Eggman by extension? I can't possibly follow through now! Kay felt a pang of guilt when she looked at Karai, but when her gaze fell back on the doctor, all of that was washed away and replaced with a fierce determination to keep his hands off of the Emerald. It was the least she could do in her position.
Her heart was pounding so hard the only thing she could think to do was turn her back to both of them. What have I done?
There was a heavy silence that fell on them all. Then, "Have you been keeping up with recent events, my dear?"
She knew he was talking about Mobius. The last thing she could remember for certain was that Sonic had met Mega-Man. "I was on vacation," she said. A moment later, those words came back to her, and she whirled around to face the screen. "That's right...you ruined my vacation, Eggman!"
He threw his head back and laughed wickedly. "Ruined? I don't think so. I'm sure I've done quite the opposite."
Kay pressed her lips together, refusing to admit that he was right. Again. He pulled that stunt on me the last time, she recalled. "What's happening on Mobius?"
Eggman straightened in his seat and began to mimic a TV news reporter as he said, "Breaking news from a breaking planet: Dark Gaia has risen from the world's core. Sonic the Hedgehog has been infected. Ancient manuscripts tell us that the only way to save Mobius from total destruction is using the energy of the Seven Chaos Emeralds to power the Gaia Temples and awaken Light Gaia. And you, my dear," he added, now in his normal voice, "have one of the gems we need."
Kay frowned. "Breaking planet?"
"See for yourself."
The doctor switched the view on the screen from him to a view of the planet from space. Kay gasped when she saw that the normally sky-blue world was broken into several pieces and floating around the now visible core, from which extended dark purple tendrils that held the pieces close like the arms of an octopus. The image was startling, but not entirely unfamiliar.
Next the doctor switched to a scene of Sonic the Hedgehog on a rampage in his werehog form, eyes crazed and body at least twice its normal size. The only thing that made it stand out from the video game was the fact that Sally and Mighty were also there, trying to calm him down. From the looks of things, it wasn't working too well.
It was something right out of Sonic Unleashed.
"This cannot be real," Kay murmured as she watched Sonic attack his friends, obviously not in his right mind.
"It is real, you little brat!" Eggman snapped as the screen flipped back to him, making both her and Karai jump back. "You hold the key to the planet's salvation in your hands and you're hesitating just because I'm the one retrieving it?"
She clenched her fists. "You want the Emeralds for all the wrong reasons, doctor. You always have."
He was silent for several moments before he finally leaned back in his seat, his face now hidden in the shadows once more. "I thought the Emerald's Chosen would be more willing to rescue her planet. And her friends."
Kay never took her eyes from him, but she also remained silent. Of course she was still loyal to her friends on Mobius, but the situation had become a double-edged sword. If she kept the Emerald, the planet would fall apart and take everyone with it. But if she gave it to Eggman, he would certainly use it against Sonic and his friends, probably make the situation even worse. At least if she chose the latter there would be a better chance for Sonic to save the planet from Eggman and Dark Gaia at the same time. All of that, and now she also had the Turtles, NYC, and possibly all of Earth to consider as well.
Kay bit her lip. She didn't know what to do.
Meanwhile, Eggman sighed in frustration and continued, "Very well. I will give you twenty-four Earth hours to bring the Emerald to me. Refuse and I will annihilate both you and your new turtle friends."
"How would you even get the Emerald back to Mobius?" She asked suddenly. "Do you have some kind of portal?"
"Genesis Portals, my dear. Do your research."
Obviously she was going to have to if she wanted to be well-informed about the problem. For all she knew Eggman was lying to her face.
"It was lovely arguing with you again," Eggman said with an evil grin. "Karai, please be so kind as to show the young lady out."
Karai nodded. "As you wish, doctor."
"Twenty-four hours, Kay," he reminded her before she left. "Sonic needs the Emeralds, too. Think about that."
