Sophie's POV {June 17th, 2010}
"NOOOOAAAAHHHH!!" I screamed at the top of my lungs. "If your butt is not in the car in two seconds I will drag you by your ear!"
I swear, the doctors gave us specific instructions. Noah gets to come home for one week then he has to be back at the hospital on June 17th at twelve in the afternoon sharp and it is now a quarter past! Does my brother not understand that he has to be on certain medication at a certain time?
"I'm COMING SOPHIE!!" he yelled back at me as he walked out the front door and slammed it shut. I was already in our crappy little car, ready to back out of the driveway and here he was, taking his sweet time.
"Really Noah? The doctors give you a break and let you come home and all they ask is that you are back on time and you do this? Play video games all night then sleep in because you didn't get any sleep last night." I looked over at him as he hopped into the passenger side of the car.
He sighed then put on his seatbelt as I backed out of the small driveway that led from our tiny, one story house to the street. "Sorry Soph, you know I haven't been home in a long time. I was just so excited to be back and have a somewhat normal week, away from all the doctors and nurses and machines."
Noah was only eight years old but he was way more mature than any other eight year old I have ever come encountered with. I guess he's been through so much that he just understands a lot. He understands what its like to lose two people you love the most at the same time. He took our parents death better than i thought he would. He still misses them like crazy but there isn't one day where he doesn't have a smile on his face. Even when he is stuck in the hospital room all day with all sorts of medication going through his system, he always finds something to be happy about.
"I know Noah, and I'm sorry, it's just the doctors are very strict and you know that."
He nodded his head because he knew I was right, like always. I will never fully take over mom's spot in Noah's life but at some point, I needed to be more than just his older sister. I needed to be his friend, his sister, his mother, his care taker. He was all I had and I was all he had. We don't let our ten year age difference come between our good relationship. I will always be there for Noah and it's my job to make sure he gets through this cancer.
The rest of the drive we just listened to the radio and Noah sang along to a few songs he knew. Glancing over at him, I smiled slightly as I saw the light in his eyes as he sang. This was his few moments of freedom. He might not have another moment like this for all we know. What we do know is that we will stay positive because Noah will get through this and be the happiest kid on this planet.
Noah slowly got out of the car when we parked in the parking lot of the hospital. He really hated it here. So did I.
"Sophie, I dont want to go back!" He groaned.
I just sighed and walked over to him. "Too bad Noah. You have to do this if you want to get better. You want to get better right?"
He nodded his little head and smiled. "More than you want to marry Zac Efron!" He laughed. He knew how Zac held a secret little place in my heart.
"Ha, ha. Very funny little man," I laughed along with him as we walked into the hospital's front doors.
Noah ran up to the front desk as soon as he saw Allison, the lady at the front desk. He just loved her and she adored him. Allison was in her late 60's, with her curly gray hair pulled back into a loose bun and her eye glasses on the tip of her tiny little nose. Allison had become very close to Noah and I, more so Noah though. I remember once when she told me she had six grandchildren. I was amazed at that but even more amazed when she told me that Noah and I were numbers five and six. I smiled to myself at her thought of kindness.
"Sooooopphhiiieeeeeeeeee," Noah whined from a few feet away. "Come here Soph!"
I walked up to the front desk where Allison was sitting in a chair behind it on the other side and Noah was peeking his head over the top of the desk. "Hi Allison," I smiled at her then looked down at Noah. "What is it Noah?"
"Nothing, i just wanted to annoy you," he snickered. Oh, that little turd-ball! I just shook my head with a small laugh as Allison soon chimed in, "Okay kiddo, its time to go see the doctors. Say bye-bye to Sophie. She will be able to come to your room in just a bit."
I smiled once more at Allison before kneeling down to Noah's height. "I'll see you in a few, okay bud?"
Noah nodded as he jumped for my arms to give me a giant hug. I stood up straight once Allison took Noah by the hand and lead him down the hallway. With just one look, i saw Noah go from the happy kid in the car to the tired, overwhelmed kid he was now in the hospital. I sighed and took a few steps back before turning to go sit in a chair in the waiting room when i head Noah's voice.
"SOOOOOOOPPPHHHHHIIIIIIEEEEEEE!" He yelled.
I quickly turned around and saw my little brother standing in the middle of the hallway with a huge smile on his face and Allison at his side.
"Soph!" he yelled again. "I think I just saw Zac Efron!"
I blinked as Allison just shook her head and laughed, she waved at me then lead Noah back down the hall.
Zac Efron? Surely my brother must have a crazy imagination.
