CHAPTER SIX: Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare

Books floated passed me as invisible hands put each book back where it belonged. To my left was a pile of books I had used to complete the homework that was set and to my right was the pile of books I was reading because I wanted to. I had titles ranging from Pride and Prejudice to Stephen King, there were a few that mentioned Dreamwalking and what triggers the dreams, but nothing was ever fully explained.

'Dreamwalkers are more sensitive to new people, after being around many people it is easy to block them out subconsciously and focus on the new person until another event overpowers another. Most Dreamwalkers find that their 'sight' is focused on one person at a time till the event has passed before moving onto another.'

Across from me, a blue button was pushed onto my page picking it up it had the letters S.P.E.W written in block letters in Hermione's distinctive neat scribble. Each letter was evenly spaced with clear dots separating the letters.
"What's this?" I asked, looking up at Hermione.
She had a basket of similar badges, each one was a different size and/or a different colour some even had the outline of an elf in the middle of the badge rather than a pattern or plan background.

A large smile broke on her face," It's the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare or S.P.E.W for short. It would've been 'Stop the Outrageous Abuse of Our Fellow Magical Creatures and Campaign for a Change in Their Legal Status' but it wouldn't fit on the badge."

"Ok?" I nodded slowly, "Why?"
Hermione put her hand out in front of her," Because it's slavery Celyn! Mr Crouch made his elf go find his seat for him then he cast a spell so she couldn't run away when the Death Eaters came."
I nodded slowly, closing my books," You are aware that House-elves take great pride in their work and the majority of them have worked for families and business for years so they have great loyalty for them –"
"And what about the ones that don't!" Hermione's voice rose in volume," They should be able to do anything they want to, just listen to the manifesto."
"Ok." I agreed," What is your manifesto?"
She cleared her throat," To secure them wages, and fair working conditions then, in the long term, have them represented at the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures so they have a say in what they do."
I gave her a tight smile," Hermione, many of them are doing what they want to like Dobby is working at Hogwarts because he wants to."
"They don't get paid or get holidays!"
With a deep sigh, I took the badge from her," If you want to help them then maybe campaign for a minimum standard of care to ensure they are fed three times a day and given a break of twenty minutes every four hours but house-elves are like Hufflepuffs... Insanely loyal, friendly and caring. Yes, some have it harder than others but with minimum standard mistreatment can be diminished if not irradiated."
She nodded," Thank you."
"What for?"
"Trying to help rather than just dismissing it."
I put my hand on top of her," 'Mione, you are one of my best friends, whatever idea you have deserves to be explored just make sure you have properly researched what you are campaigning about."

She pulled me into a hug over the desks, taking the basket of homemade large pin badges she practically skipped out of the library. Looking down at Drizella, my dog just looked at me with pure confusion. Stretching the back of her ear I continued to read the passage in the book.

'If the Dreamwalker has a strong relationship either friendship, romantic relationship or familial, then they can walk another's dreams to communicate or share what they have seen.
The next step from this is then progressing to focusing on events that are currently occurring. Many times, this is done by accident however with practise both skills can be perfected'

Checking the time, I took the book to Madam Prince to check out – I put the six-hundred-page book in my bag as I whistled for Drizella to follow. Choir practise started at one, which gave me thirty minutes to make my way up to the Great Hall where todays practise would be taking place.
On the steps the Choir members were clumped together talking wearing their black house cloaks over their weekend clothes, I still found it strange to see all the houses mixing together because it was rare to see a Hufflepuff and a Ravenclaw talking as the personality class was a headache.
