As I sat in History listening to Mr. Davis go on and on about the Civil War, a student aid from the office came in. She handed him a note and left.
“Cody, Olivia, you are needed in the principals office.” I looked at Olivia. She shrugged. As we walked towards the office, we saw Trevor, Cassie, and Lexi walking towards us.
“Do you guys know what’s going on?” Trevor asked.
“No idea” I replied. We enter the principals office. In there wasn’t our principal, but a police officer. My heart instantly speed up.
If they found out it was me, why would they bring everyone else down here too?
“Hello guys, I’m Officer Garcia. I just need to ask you a few questions. The first thing I need to know is where all you were last night” It felt like my throat was closing.
“Lexi and I were at work. We work at our Aunt’s café over on the west side of town” Cassie said. Officer Garcia looked at Lexi.
“Is that correct?” Lexi nodded. She wrote something in a notepad. Next she looked at me.
“I was with some friends over at Nick Campbell’s house” Which was partly true. I didn’t tell her I left early and that my truck broke down downtown. She wrote something down again. Then she looked at Olivia.
“I was with my boyfriend last night. Matt Williams” Yet, again she wrote what we said down.
“Do any of you know where your Dad was last night?”
What does Dad have to do with this?
“He was home when I got home” I said. Everyone else nodded in agreement.
“Did anything seem different about him? Was he acting different? Anything unusual?” Everyone was quiet for a second, thinking back to last night.
“Not that I noticed. He seemed normal.” Trevor said.
“Oh wait, there was one thing, he had a different clothes on when I came home” Lexi said. Officer Garcia looked up at the other officer in the room. He nodded. Then she wrote down in her notepad. I thought about last night. Now that I think of it, Dad did have different clothes on when we ate dinner.
“Now, your all probably wondering why your down here. There is no easy way to say this…about an hour ago, your Dad turned him self in for the murder of Bryan Jennings.” I stood up.
“Are you serious?” I asked. She nodded.
“I need some air. I feel like I‘m going to be sick” Before I could make it out of the room, I threw up.
We were escorted to a hotel by the police. Officer Garcia stayed with us. We weren’t aloud to go home because the police were still investigating our house. On our way to the motel, Dad’s “plan” had hit me. That’s what he was talking about. That why he kept saying everything was going to be okay. My mind raced.
What did Dad do with my clothes? Why would he turn him self him? Why would he say it was him?
How could he do this to them? I looked over at my siblings. They haven’t said a word sense we found out. I went over to the bed and sat by Olivia.
“Why would he do something like this?” She said as her voice cracked, she was trying not to cry. I put my arm around her.
“I don’t know” I got up and walked over to Officer Garcia
. “Can I asked you something?” I asked. “Sure.” She replied.
“Is there anyway I can talk to my Dad?” She looked at me.
“You might be able to talk to him at the station but I’m not sure they’ll let him have visitors right now” I nodded.
“Why would you want to talk to him? I don’t ever want to talk to him again. I can’t believe we were living with a murderer!” Trevor said with anger.
“Hey! I don’t understand why he did this either but he’s our Dad!” I said back.
“No, he not.” I looked at him. “He’s just your guys Dad now. I don’t want a murderer as a father.” I couldn’t believe he was saying this. Dad wasn’t even the one who was killed Bryan. I didn’t even want imagine the way he would have acted if he found out it was me. I turned back to Officer Garcia.
“When can I talk to my Dad?”
Officer Garcia had her partner come pick me and take me to the station. They only allowed me 10 minutes to talk to Dad. I walked over to the chair and picked up the phone. I looked at my Dad through the glass.
“Cody, what are you doing here?” He asked.
“I should be asking you the same question. Dad, What are you doing? Why did you say it was you?” I asked.
“You are so young Cody, you haven’t lived yet. I have, I’ve had a wonderful life.” I cut him off.
“I don’t care if I haven’t “lived” my life yet, Dad you shouldn’t be in here. You had no right to do this. I was the one who made a mistake. How could you do this to Olivia and them? Do you even know what they think of you right now?” I started to get angry.
“I can imagine what they think of me. But I’m okay with that. And yes Cody, I did have a right to do this. You are my son and I will do anything to protect you.” I looked at him.
“How can you be okay with your children thinking you are a murderer?” He looked at me in shock.
“Times up” I got up and left.
Well that didn’t help.
