I drove up to the house James had brought me earlier, he was sitting on the front porch. I got out of truck and walked up to him. I handed him the one hundred dollar bill with the twenty and the couple of dollars I had in the jar.

“I said it was seventy, why are you giving me extra?” I laughed.

“Give me how ever many you can with that much” He sat up.

“Are you sure?” I nodded.

“I’ll be right back” He turned and walked back into the house. I heard yelling coming from inside the house. Adam came running outside, the door slamming behind him.

“Uh, here.” He said as he handed me the bag. “I can only give you seventy dollars worth right now, I’ll give you the rest later. I promise.” He said, he looked panicked. I wasn’t sure about his answer.

“Give me the rest of my money back, I’ll give it to you when you give me the rest” I said. His faced dropped and he looked down to the ground.

“I can’t give you your money back, I left it inside.” He mumbled.

“What? Then go back inside and get it” I insisted. I wasn’t going to give him that much money with out getting everything in return.

“I can’t!” He said, a little to loud.

“Why?” I asked.

“It’s my step dad, he’s drunk. I can’t get to the pain killers right now.” He said.

“Oh…That’s fine” I replied. “Well, where are you going to stay if you can’t go back inside?” I asked.

“I’ll go over to my dads. Why do you care?” He asked.

“No reason…”

“You better get going, before my step dad comes out” I nodded and turn towards my truck without even thinking. “Oh shit! Dude, your bleeding!” I stopped, for some reason I completely forgot about the blood on my back, even though I could still feel the pain. I turned around.

“I know” He looked shocked.

“What happened?!” I sighed.

“I can’t tell you…” I replied.

“What!? You can’t tell me why your bleeding everywhere from your back? Your jackets soaked with blood.” I nodded.

“I know, I can feel it. That’s why I need these” I said, pointing to the bag.

“Oh, well you can’t go back home with your jacket like that. Why don’t you come to my Dad’s house and get cleaned up. I’ll give you a shirt or something.” He said, with a caring voice. I’ve never seen him like this before.

“Are you sure?” I asked.

“Yes” He nodded. I nodded back. I got back in my truck. There was a day old powerade in my cup holder. I got out two pills and took them. Then, I followed James to his Dad’s house.

I was surprised to see that James’s dad lived in the same neighborhood that I did. I pulled into the drive way and got out of my truck.

“Are you sure this is okay?” I asked.

“Yeah, my dad’s not even home right now.” He replied.

“Oh, what does he do for work?” I asked, as I stepped onto the front porch.

“He a doctor” He said, as he opened the front door. I was surprised to find out James’s dad was a doctor. No wonder his dad lived in this neighborhood. Our neighborhood was know as one of the “rich” neighborhoods. Dad was lawyer.

I had always thought James was poor. He wore worn down clothes, I always thought that he lived with his mom in the house we just came from, and I thought he sold drugs to make money.

“The bathroom’s down the hall, second door on your right” He said.

“Thanks” I said, making my way down the hallway.

“’I’ll go get you a shirt” I heard him say. I walked into the bathroom. I almost didn’t recognize myself. I looked like I hadn’t got sleep in weeks, I looked like a different person. But maybe that’s because my life was completely different now, maybe I was suppose to be a different person now. My phoned vibrated and I grabbed it out of my pocket. It was a text from Olivia.

Olivia: Hello? Where are you? We’ve been trying to get a hold of you for awhile now. Are you okay?

Me: Yeah, I’m fine. Sorry. I’m at Nick’s house. I’ll be home soon.

I turned around to see my back in the mirror. James wasn’t kidding when he said my jacket was soaked with blood. The jacket was completely ruined. I took off the jacket slowly, I was afraid to see the damage on my back. I was shocked to see it, it was worse them I had imagined. I had 1 inch cuts all around my back. Some of them were pretty deep cuts too. I grabbed some toilet paper and got it wet. I tried my best to reach my back, but I couldn’t get all of it. James knocked on the door, then came in without even waiting for an answer.

“Oh my god!” He said as he saw my back.

“Pretty bad huh?” I said.

“Can I help you?” He asked. I handed him the wet toilet paper, he carefully wiped all of blood off. “Some, well most of these need stitches. They probably won’t heal if you don’t get them.” I shook my head.

“I can’t go to the hospital” I turned around so I was facing him. “You have to promise me you won’t tell anyone about theses, please?” I begged.

“Yeah, of course. Look Cody, my dad will be home soon. He won’t ask any questions, he won’t tell anyone, just please let him stitch you up.” I thought about it for a second.

"Fine” I said. We watched TV until James’s dad came home. James walked into the kitchen, he was talking to his dad about me.

“Yeah, of course I will” His dad said. “Hello, You must be Cody. I’m Jason.” He said as he walked into the room.

“Hi” I said.

“Mind if I take a look at your back?” He asked. I shook my head and turned around. I could hear him gasp in shock. “Cody, I’m going to need to give you some pain killers. You won’t be able to drive after I give you them” I looked over at James, who knew I already took painkillers.

“Dad, I already gave him some ibuprofen” James said. His dad laughed.

“James, I’m glad you did, but ibuprofen isn’t strong enough” He said. He turned back to me.

“Cody, you can stay the night here” I nodded.

"Thanks” I pulled out my phone to text Olivia.

Me: Hey, I’m just going to stay at Nicks.

Olivia: Cody, are you kidding me? We all need you right now, I need you, probably more then ever and your just going to stay at a friends house like nothing ever happened?

I sighed. “Look, can you just do it without the painkillers, I need to go home after this.” I asked.

“No, I’m sorry Cody. I’m not going to put you through that pain.” He replied. I never expected James’s dad to be like this.

“Okay, I’ll use the pain killers.” I texted Olivia back.

I’m sorry. I’ll see you tomorrow. Love you

I was originally not going to have James become a main character, but I have an idea for him later in the story. I hope you guys enjoyed this chapter. I worked out yesterday, and I did some boxing. Today, I am feeling the pain of it in my back. It hurts to move, to even walk. I now know what Cody feels like!
