PART 2
5 Years After Escaping the Bunker
-----------------------------------------------------------
My 2nd day outside the bunker. And I had enlisted to become a NMMC. Otherwise meaning, New Merica Marine Corps. When the settlers landed here, centuries ago, this became their new country. And they named it New Merica. I never learned about this in my history classes.
It was strange, being a soldier. I had never wanted to fight a war. But, the very true reality was, if we didn't fight back now, then these strange New Colonists, would take our planet. Our country. So I joined.
The New Colonists were searching for every bunker they could find, and destroy it, with its occupants inside. So, the NMMC, built bases in every known bunker area. For example, one area would house around, maybe 3 bunkers. Spread out, in miles, but they would all be on the same mountain. So, they would build a base. Anyone who left their bunkers, would find the base.
Once this happened, they could become a citizen, or, join the military. Unfortunately for us, our bunker was located in an area that was violent. Sometimes, when we slept, dust would randomly fall from the ceiling, and other times, a wall would collapse, or a door wouldn't work right.
We were on the Frontlines, for a war, we didn't want to fight.
But, I enlisted. For the safety of the people. But, I lost my friends. Rachel married a man and had a family, but the city she was in was attacked, and her house was in the way of mortar fire. Ariana, had also joined the war, but she too lost her life, but she died courageously, and had sacrificed herself for the betterment of the soldiers around her. She earned the Medal Of Honor. Anthony, had been in my squad for the longest time. But when he wouldn't answer his radio, we had to check on him. He was a sniper, but somehow, they killed him, and his guard. And last of all, David. David was ripped to shreds by a rare, but strong monster. It was the one we had in the bunker. The one who killed Jimmy.
I mentioned this to Command, as I was surprised to find that these beasts are rare, and are highly dangerous. They suggested that I had a nest above my bunker. They sent 300 men to check out our bunker. They were right. Only 256 survived. But they eradicated the nest.
After 5 years serving my country, and fighting for what was right, I wasn't dead. Soldiers nicknamed me Overwatch. Which meant, wherever I go, the men with me won't die.
People took me for a good luck charm. It must have been an angel, right? Either way, I had enough. I quit. And I have decided to explore the lands I haven't seen.
I've revisited the bunker. Bunker 249. I found skeletons everywhere. And I found Jimmy's bones. I cried. Never before has a memory been so painful. I took the bones I could find, and I buried him in front of the bunker. I did the same to everyone I could recognize. Anyone I couldnt, got a grave, that stated,"Unknown Person. Killed unfairly, while living innocently."
I buried kids, adults, teens, and even a few of my past crushes.
After that, I decided to build my own little town. Created for one purpose. To honor those who lost their lives to the beasts.
Then, after I built my town, a enemy expeditionary force came through the area. And destroyed most of the town.
I cried. I was becoming emotional in the past, and because of this terrible war.
But, I've changed. After a year of fighting my emotions, and my instincts, I've decided to leave my mountainous area. And search for a greater place, where I hope to do some good.
So, I've left. I decided to go to a place that most hate. An Old World technology facility. A place, where the war efforts, really thrived. They tried experiments to make beasts.
Experiments to make animals, ones that could stop the war effort. Could the experiments be the animals that killed my friends?
Either way, I journeyed there. Hoping to maybe end my suffering. I went there not really knowing what to do with life.
Like a moth, drawn to a flame.
