"Captain, when will we get back to base?" Moaned a recruit.
"I've already explained 17 times! We get back when we're done clearing this area! Now get in that building!" I ordered.
They trudged forward, exhausted, and hungry. And utterly annoyed.
They walked in, and I shut the door behind them.
"You know the rest, clear the building." I ordered firmly, but was caught be screaming.
"Sergeant, look behind you! There's a frag!" Everyone turned to the Sergeant, a frag grenade fell right behind him.
"Oh mother-" The frag grenade blew up, and he flew off the ground.
Everyone fell backward.
"On your feet! Now! Go! Go! Go!"
Disoriented, and confused they quickly got up, and started shooting at another hallway.
"Clear that hall!" I screamed, outraged. I glanced back at the Sergeant, who's corpse was hanging from a wall.
Gunfire suddenly started echoing though the room. I stood there, trying to piece together the attack. And then I realized, what if they try to flank us by going through the other door?
My guns barrel flew to that direction, and kept it there. Afraid of the possibility, of us all dying.
The recruits intensity of his LMG, started to lessen, and then he started screaming.
"I'm hit! I'm hit! Medic! Med-" His sentence was cut short by a bullet to his helmet. It went through, completely.
"Hold that hall, because we'll all die if I don't watch the door!" I yelled.
So, we were stuck trying to clear a hall, and the door to the outside was dangerous, as there could've been enemy soldiers in vicinity of it.
"Someone get that radio, and call for evac! Now!" I bellowed, not taking an eye off the door.
The radio man waddled over to me, and called for evac.
"What now sir?"
"Watch that door over there with your life," I said.
I quickly walked to a window to see if anyone was outside. I looked out, and was shot at immediatly. The luck I had to duck, was amazing.
Sadly though, even with evac, even with some men, we didn't win the battle. Infact, because of the evac request, more soldiers just died from several ambushes while trying to reach our position.
I regret ever sending that evac request. I just wish I never even asked. I should've died there with my men.
Instead, they died, and I survived.
