CHAPTER TEN

       Adam wakes up and sees the clock on Kara's table saying it is eight-fifty. He looks down at her and she is still asleep; he doesn't wants to wake her up and right now he doesn't even care about his momma's album. He can pick it up whenever he wants. Right now he likes being with her, it feels right to him. He runs his finger down her wavy hair and in seconds she wakes up.
       "Sorry... I didn't want to wake you up." he says when he sees she opens her eyes.
       "Don't worry, I'm a light-sleeper-." she says with a sleepy tone and then looks up at Adam "I would wake up anyway." she gives him a grin. He smiles still playing with her hair.
       "Thanks... um for staying. You didn't have to."
       "It's not a problem. I'm glad I came."
       "I don't even know what happened. I got sad, and the memories came rushing back at me... I... it-." he nods and he continues her thought "I know. It comes out of nowhere. It is normal... but never let it affect you... or even worse, never let it do things you'll regret."
       "Thanks... again."
       "Not need to thank me gorgeous... I enjoy your company." he says with a smile and she blushes and opens her mouth to respond but a knock on the door interrupts them.
       Kara sits down on the edge of the bed and says "C'mon." Mike enters thru the door, and he lets out a relieve smile when he sees that Kara is okay "Um... Adam this is my brother Mike. Mike this is the new guy, Adam." Mike gives Adam a quick glance and then turns his face back to Kara "Are you okay?" he asks concern because he doesn't know what happened last night.
       She nods looking at the floor, so he knows that nothing is wrong but she knows that her brother will need words so she looks up at him and says "Um... yeah, I had... a weak moment." she gives a small glance to Adam.
       He gives an insecure look at Adam, he doesn't likes leaving Kara alone with a guy he doesn't know "You sure?" this time she nods. She knows that her brother is overprotective and by the way he looked at Adam she knows that he doesn't likes her being with him, but for the first time that didn't matter to her. She wants to be with him, he makes her feel secure.
       "Okay, you can come down for breakfast wherever you want." she nods and Mike goes out of the room, not closing the door entirely.
       She rolls her eyes and sits besides Adam grabbing his hand "Sorry about him... he's just overprotective and you and me being in my room makes him mad."
       "Don't worry... I get it." he looks down at their hands together and then looks at her and leans to kiss her, but she clears her throat and stands up before saying "We should go down... he'll be coming back if we don't go downstairs." she could see the disappointment in Adam's eyes, but he still nods "Give me five minutes to get dressed." she says and he nods again before getting out of her bedroom.
       Kara grabs a white pair of shorts and her favorite t-shirt and gets dress.
       Kara keeps pushing him back every time he tries to get closer. She likes him, she can admit it, but just thinking that her brother might come in while she kissed Adam doesn't sounds appealing and as much as she hated to turn him down, again. She couldn't afford the risk of having her overprotective brother seeing her kissing a guy, he hasn't approved... in her bedroom. 'Yeah not worth the risk' she thinks as she imagines that scene happening and goes out of the room, but her thoughts a get interrupted by Adam "What are you thinking?"
       She blushes "Um... nothing." she lies, but he doesn't argue and just nods and she shows him the way down to the dining room.
       When they got downstairs Jenna says "Good morning y'all."
       Jenna is sitting on the table with Mike and he is sitting in the chair beside her.
       Kara smells eggs and neither of their brothers cooked in the morning. The only one who liked cooking in the morning was Kara and her mother. She turns her head to the kitchen and sees her mother cooking 'Just what I needed' she thinks and returns her head back to Jenna "Good morning everyone."
       When she heard Kara's voice Margaret goes to the dining room and asks "Hungry?" she first glances at Kara and then realizes that Adam is beside her and Kara notices the concern-curious look on her mother's face.
       'Oh no, I will not be answering questions from my mother' she grabs Adam's arm and says "We were going to the park." the confuse look in Adam's face was obvious, but before anyone could say anything she was already in the door saying good bye.
       Already outside she looks at Adam who is still confuse and says "I got nervous... I don't want to be answering my mother's questions."
       "That's okay." he says still confuse, but he notices that Kara is still grabbing his arm. She follows his eyes and realizes that she is still grabbing him so she gets her distance from him.
       Her heart races again. She doesn't know if they are going to the park 'We were going to the park later because he had to do something. What did he have to do... um...? VISIT HIS FATHER RIGHT. Maybe he wants to go with his father first and come back later... or maybe after this crazy scene I made he will not want to be with me again...' with that thought on her mind she knows that she has to ask him what are they going to do. She wants to be with him but she will not let him know that.
       "You... you've to go to see your dad right?" he shakes his head and says "No. I can go any other day."
       She raises her eyes and thinks 'Okay not what I expected' him wanting to be with her made her heart go way faster than before 'Kara breathe... act cool' "You don't have to stay for me... go." she says not meaning any of those words.
       "I radar being in the park with you that in town with him." he says with a small grin and she blushes.
       He grabs her hand reassuring her he isn't going anywhere. They walk toward his car and he opens her door, and she thinks if she should enter or not, but at the end she does. Spending time with him sounds appealing at this moment.
       He drives and then asks her "So, do we go to eat?"
       "Yeah please, I'm starving!!!"
       "You're from here, where should we go?"
       "Do you like pancakes?" He nods "I'll guide you to the best pancakes in the entire world." she says exited.
       "I like the sound of that." he says with a grin.
       "You will go straight and I'll tell you when to turn." he nods, and she thinks about her mother. She knows that when she gets back she must deal with questions from everyone, questions she doesn't wants to answer.
       'They will ask me about Adam and me. I don't want them judging Adam. Mike isn't thrill he spends the night with me. I know Jenna doesn't cares and my mother... I don't care about my mother's opinion, she has none say in my life... she lost any respect I had for her when she didn't show up at Mike's graduation.' her thoughts get interrupted when she hears Adam talking to her so she turns her head to face him.
       And like he can read her mind he asks "Um... can I... Can I ask about your mother?" he's unsure if she wants to talk to him about her mother.
       "Um... yeah sure, it isn't like a secret." she says reassuring him it's okay to ask about her "I told you she isn't with me most of the time and that she is terrible at being a mother."
       "Yeah, but why didn't you wanted to answer questions from her?"
       "She is... picky. Even though she isn't with me like normal mothers are, she still likes to criticize lots of things and well... um she will had asked questions about you... us... and-." Adam raises his eyes when he heard the word 'us' and Kara freeze when she realizes she had said too much.
       'Crap, I said too much. Now he will know that I like him. Why do I open my mouth? I need to say something more' she looks at him and his face seems waiting for her to continue "you know since you're new and everything... um." his expression change and now he's concern 'Crappity, crappity, crap, God I cannot be more idiot can I?' her phone rings and she is so thankful for whoever is calling her right now. She answers it at once without even seeing who is calling.
       "Yeah?" she says, still looking at Adam with his concern expression.
       "What in the world was that?" she recognizes the voice of Jenna and she knows that she is talking about Adam and her.
       "Nothing, I had a date planned."
       "I noticed that but-." Jenna says but Kara interrupts her "Hold that thought." she says to Jenna and then looks at Adam "Turn here to the right and then you'll go left when you see a gas station." he nods, and she returns to her phone "You were saying...?"
       "Aha, you went running from here."
       "I didn't want to deal with mom." she admits.
       "I get that, but Mike is like freaking out. For him you're with a strange guy." Kara can hear that Mike is right behind Jenna so she says "Give Mike the phone." and then turns to Adam to show him he has to turn left.
       "KARA!" He says screaming and she notices that Adam heard him.
       "Don't scream Gosh! I'm fine, I didn't want to deal with mom and I used Adam as an excuse to go out. We will eat and go to the park. I will be home after lunch."
       "OH NO-." normally she will have care for what her brother said, but she wants to be with Adam, why?
       She isn't sure, but that is what she wants and she will do what she wants, so she interrupts her brother, something she doesn't do, and says "Remember we want mom to think I moved on right? So calm down and don't make a big deal out of this!!!" She could hear Jenna giggling in the back and that Mike is furious so before he could tell her anything else she hangs up the phone.
       Adam's eyes are open in amuse of what he heard, she doesn't knows if that's a good thing or a bad thing, so she gives him time to talk.
       "I think your brother isn't my fan." he admits.
       'Oh this is about Mike' she thinks before answering "He isn't a fan of any guy friend I've, he hasn't met. He is overprotective of me and it pisses him off that I ran off with you. It's more about me than it is about you. Don't worry."
       "I can see he's overprotective." he says with smile "I must meet him so he doesn't get so mad at you."
       That made Kara remembered about her mother's party on Wednesday and she wants Adam to come so without thinking it twice she asks him "So... um my mother is throwing a party this Wednesday... she does it every year, is lame but I was wondering if you'll like to come to the party with me?"
       Adam didn't even thought about it before giving his answer "Yeah, sure I'll be there."
       "Um, great." she says trying to hide her smile.
       After a few seconds she says "Turn here to your right and you'll see the cafeteria."
       He turns, and he sees a cafeteria with the name of Mel's and with pancakes on the logo so he parks outside that cafeteria.
       They get out of the car and enter to the cafeteria.
       "This cafeteria is one of the four in Mountain West and the most popular one, because of their pancakes and is one the oldest too." Kara explains while they sit on a table.
       The cafeteria is decorated like the 80's. The floor has the black-and-white-chess-design and the chairs are aqua with white stripes. All about the place makes you feel like you are in the 80's. Even the music that is playing is from the 80s.
       Kara notices how Adam sees every corner of the place and analyzes everything is around them "I love the place too. It makes you feel you've travel time, huh?" he smiles at her and nods "And you haven't even taste the pancakes. You will fall in love with the place after that." she says with a smile.
       A waitress come to the table and looks shock at Kara not even noticing that Adam is in the table and gives her a hug "Honey haven't I see you in so long. I was waiting for you to come soon. How are you doing sweetheart?"
       "I'm doing good Daisy, I had wanted to come but... just couldn't." she gives a small fake smile at her "I've miss these months... and I brought Adam-." she says glancing toward Adam and the waitress notices him "he's new in town and I brought him here so he can taste your glorious pancakes."
       "I know what to bring... and now to drink y'all want our orange juice?"
       Kara looks at Adam to see if he wants orange juice and he gives her a small nod "Yeah please." Kara says answering for both of them.
       "Then I'll be coming in a few." Daisy walks away and turns her head back at Kara and gives her thumbs-up and winks at her and that made Kara laugh and shakes her head.
       "She's like a second sister for me. I've been to this place since I've memory and she has always worked here. Her father owns the place and summers she comes here and helps him to waitress. She doesn't lives here... this is more of her summer job." Kara explains to Adam.
       "She seemed to care about you."
       "Yeah, I haven't been around here... well to be honest I haven't went out of my house all summer until the Lake party we met. That was the first time I was out of my house on my own will." This is something she will not share. Kara doesn't like the fact she had been all summer locked up in her room grieving, but talking to Adam was easy on Kara. She doesn't have shame on telling him anything.
       Kara, and that's strange because she doesn't trusts lots of people. She thinks it is because he passed thru something similar or well even worst. He knows what it feels like to lose the person you love the most and because of that he is the only one that understands her. So talking to him about stuff like these is easy.
       Daisy places the two plates of pancakes with four pancakes in a tower in each plate and puts the jar with orange juice and two cups in the table too. Daisy stood back Kara chair looking at Adam "I want to know if y'all like it. Even though I know Kara loves them it's the sweetest thing to watch her face when she eats the pancakes." Kara blushes at Daisy's comments and glances to Adam and waits for him to take the first bite.
       When Adam puts the first piece in his mouth and chews it and his eyes raises and he gapes letting out a pleasing moan. Both, Daisy and Kara, chuckle when they hear Adam "Gosh they're real good." he says and Daisy nods happily and walks away.
       "Didn't I tell you?" Kara says teasing and eats too.

       ​After both of them finished their plate of pancakes they walked from the cafeteria to the park since it was seven minutes on foot. All the way to the park they talk and talk about everything: favorite type of music, favorite shows, thinks that happened to them in school, their families, their past vacations.
​       Already on the park Kara talks about the worst birthday she had "So I was thirteen and I wanted to go camping... why? Don't know... I wanted that. It seemed fun. And well I went camping with a group, of eight girls and my sister. We went to our popular mountain." she says pointing at the mountain "It has a place for campers where you can sleep, but it's like really high. Almost on top of the mountain... and the view is one of the most amazing views you have. You can see everything, the Lake, the houses, cars and everything seems so small and you feel so big out there.
       Is the place I go when I want to find peace because everything is so quite there is no car or people talking, just the sound of the wind hitting the trees and the birds... it's the place I hide when I want no one to find me." she gets quite for a minute remembering something and then shakes her head and continues "Anyway, is high and we were all going on foot. So there was a lot of wining from everyone... including me, that was the first wrong thing that happened. Then we forgot half of the food. Don't know how that happen but well, we had to eat like nothing compared for what I had planned and none of us have had lunch nor dinner so we were all starving, second bad thing that happened. And after getting thru the night, I woke up to find both of my legs cover in blood." Adam's mouth for an 'o' and he asked but Kara nods "Yeah I got my first period. So you can imagine how cranky and embarrassed I was." she lets out a little laugh at the end that made Adam laugh too.
       "What was your worst birthday?" she asks him.
       "I never celebrate my birthday." he admits and Kara stops walking surprise for what she heard.
       "WHAT? WHY?" she asks almost screaming and Adam shrugs "My parents didn't celebrate my birthday. Or neither of their birthdays... we handed presents and watch a movie the three of us." he answers and walks again
       "Nonsense, I'm celebrating your next birthday! When is it?" She says on a serious tone that made Adam glance "Um... tomorrow." he says and Kara's face got even more serious.
       "Oh, I'm like planning something." she assures him.
       "You don't have to. I don't want a birthday party."
       She laughs at his comment not believing a word he said "Huh yeah right, everyone wants to celebrate their birthday. There is no discussing that Adam. You're having a birthday party."
       Watching her get crazy-mad about his birthday party made Adam happy and before he thinks what he is doing he grabs Kara's arm and turn her around so she faces him "You know you look pretty when you act so possessive and mad." he puts both of his hands around her waist and she trembles and accidentally takes a step back and her body hits a tree and she stays frozen and the thing she says is "Oh." with her heart going on like crazy and her mind not thinking straight, she couldn't form words.
       "Yeah oh, Kara." he says before leaning close to her and whispers in her ear "I'm going to kiss you." she didn't argue, and she wants him to kiss her so she simple gives him a small nod and in seconds his mouth was on her. This time no phone ring, no one pushed no one away. They were kissing and at the moment they were kissing neither of them cared about anything, they knew it felt right.
       After a while Adam broke off the kiss and they stood there seeing each other's eyes, until Adam says "I don't want you to feel pressure or anything. I know you are still healing and-." before he could say anything else Kara kisses him again, this time more soft and then says "Don't ruin the moment thinking, just live it." he nods and kisses her again.
       After a few minutes they sit against the tree and Kara says "I don't know why or how, but you are healing me so I want you." he kisses her forehead and tries his best to hide his smile, but it was impossible. She wants to be with him and he wants to be with her, which was enough to make him happy.
       "I'm glad to hear that because I want you too."
