CATCH THE WIND
SUMMARY

"That's the Number One Rule, the only one you'll never be forgiven for breaking. Ain't nobody -- nobody -- allowed in the Maze except the Runners. Break that rule, and if you ain't killed by the Grievers, we'll kill you ourselves, you get me?"

"What's the second rule?"

"You listen closely, Greenie. If I ever catch you giving her those eyes again -- yes, those -- I won't hesitate to kill you myself. Maybe I'll just feed you to the Grievers, or throw you off the Cliff. Either way, it'll be slow, and it'll be painful. You get me?"

SHE BEGAN her new life in the way that all the others after her would. In the way that the first had, and the way that the last would. She began her new life standing up, blinded by the curiosity that even the loudest, most obnoxious of warning signs couldn't pacify. She began her new life with a certain restlessness to her, one that would prove lethal when the last thing she needed was to toy with the chances of own her survival. She began her new life with a single title, one that meant a great deal more than she had originally anticipated. She began her new life alongside another, a boy, and together the duo had orchestrated a society built for two, complete with the necessities needed to sustain their teenage lives for as long as they had to.

A month had passed before a third, another boy, arrived. Then, it was three teenagers. Soon enough, a fourth was found in the box. This cycle continued on ceaselessly, one Greenie for every passing month, until an amateur civilization was created from absolutely nothing. The hope that another girl would eventually arrive died out as quickly as it had been formulated, and a civilization of dozens of teenage boys and one teenage girl had begun to operate effortlessly until they arrived. He was first, with his stupid impulsiveness and desire to do everything he wasn't supposed to do. He irritated her, and she irritated him. He liked liking her, and she hated hating him. The two were so completely alike that it was only fitting for them to eventually clash, creating a heavy-weighted conflict until she arrived. And, boy, did Teresa make a mess of everything.

The last one ever came up not alone, but with the implication of the end. Teresa had been the last element to obliterate the sense of order that the first two Gladers had created, and she had ignited a subdued desire within the group, one that initiated a plan to escape. A plan that would, ultimately, unravel the complexities and riddles of a maze that had held them all captive for as long as they could will themselves to remember. He had a lot of wit, coming up with a plan that reckless, she'll give him that much. What she won't give him, though, fell somewhere between the lines of her trust, her respect, and her first kiss.

Lucky for him, he didn't lose hope very easily.

DISCLAIMER: I do not own The Maze Runner book series or movie adaptation. All rights are reserved to the author, James Dashner, Wes Ball, the director, and any other creators/producers of the books/movies. I do, however, own Joan and any non-TMR related plotlines I decide to equip her with. In other words, there will be a problem if I see Joan and/or her plot anywhere else. Hope you enjoy!

If I didn't frustrate you with that cringe-worthy summary, I hope I don't frustrate you with this: as of right now, school has actually eaten up all of my free time and the amount of homework I've been getting is actually ridiculous. That being said, the majority of my stories have been put on hold and you guys, most likely, will not see many updates for those like HoD, BH, AL, etc. etc. anytime soon. My focus will be mainly on this, Selene, and a new original story that I'm currently working on for my second account, hyperreaIism.

Anyway, I really hope you guys liked this. I'm extremely excited to write Joan (whose name was not mentioned in the summary for various reasons) into TMR, mainly because I love her character and the relationship she will eventually have with Thomas has me screeching internally. Until I get my hands on the movie, CTW will be centered mainly around the book. Please, please let me know what you guys thought of this! I've said it many times before, and I'll say it again, your feedback means the absolute world to me, and I couldn't be more grateful for your compliments. I love you all so much, and I hope you guys are having a good weekend!

(PS: Dedicated to Amanda for the gorgeous cover. Like, can we take a moment here? Also she survived the SATs, so there's that. Love you, Mother Bear.)

(PSS: Let me know if you think you know why Joan is named Joan, I'll be surprised if any of you guess it before I post the prologue. But, I may just think I'm clever. Who knows. [Tra, you better not comment because that'd be unfair ;-) ]).
