The Heiress of the Sistrum

Chapter 5

All students now were waiting for the bus to arrive. We were 30 students in total, all the other ones were too lazy to go in my opinion.  Derek, Elijah and Sebastian were among the campers. They didn't acknowledge us though.

The bus came a few minutes later and we all took our seats. I sat next to girl with auburn hair and chocolate brown eyes. Her skin was sunkissed and she wore black glasses.

"Hey, I'm Katherine but call me Kate" she said introducing herself.
"Adele" I said smiling.

"I'm so excited for camping" she said enthusiastically.
"Me too" I said sharing her enthusiasm,  "What's your major?" I asked.
"English literature and Creative writing"
"Same major" I said smiling
"It'll be nice to know someone has the same major as me" she said.
We chatted through the whole ride, Kate was really cool, I introduced her to Claire and Valerie on the bus and she turned out to be Valerie's cousin.

The bus stopped in front of a tiny hill with 15 tents scattered around. There were 6 small portable bathrooms and a small shed which had snacks and food.

We got down and followed Professor.  Bishop and Professor. Jane (The art professor) to the tents. It was like a mini hike, climbing up the hill.

"Attention please" prof. Jane said turning all heads towards her.
"As you know, each tent will be shared by two students picked randomly, no excuses allowed"

So I could be paired with a guy, I thought. I wish not really, I've never shared a room with a guy before so I hope it doesn't happen now.

They started assigning the tents by picking two names randomly from a bag.
Valerie was paired with Kate.
Claire was paired with Derek.
And I was paired with Sebastian, oh joy. Note the sarcasm.

"Hey Valerie, Could you please switch with me?" I said approaching her.
"No, I want to spend some time with my cousin" she said smirking.
"Fine, be that way" I said annoyed.
She gave me an innocent smile and left me for dead.
Sweet now I have to room with a guy.

I enter the tent and find Derek instead of Sebastian.  I stood for a moment staring at him confused, wasn't he supposed to be paired with Claire.

"Are you going to stand there for long? " he said
I entered the tent looking at him warily,  "Aren't you paired with Claire?" I questioned.
"Yes, but apparently my friend Sebastian fancies her and asked me to switch tents" he explained with a bored expression.
Maybe he didn't want to share a tent with me. I just shrugged at him.

The tent was fairly large, it had two sleeping bags and two tables. I wasn't comfortable sharing a tent with a guy, so I will just keep my distance I guess.

We didn't speak to each other while we unpacked. I hummed a soft tune to fill the air that was consumed with silence. Derek didn't say anything so I assumed it didn't bother him.
We exited the tent when we were called for breakfast and to know the program ahead of us.

" During most of the games, your tent mate will be your teammate. Today we have a musical challenge,  the challenge is basically that a randomly picked team will start singing a song. The song will be chosen by the team according to the randomly picked category.
For example a song about love and so on and you have a minute to think of a song you can either sing it solo or duo. If you don't sing you lose. Last team standing wins. All clear."
After professor.  Bishop explained the game, he grabbed a bad full of categories and teams.

The first team was Elijah and a guy named Robert. Their category was break up but they failed to come up with a song. Clearly they didn't listen to Taylor Swift.
I didn't know the next two teams, one of them was eliminated as well.
The next team was me and Derek, we haven't said to each other a word since we got out of the tent.
I waited for them to pronounce our category and it was gender equality.
A song immediately popped in my head as if it was a reflex action.  It was Do it like a dude by Jessie J.
"I know a song" I said to Derek, "well, I was going to tell you to sing solo anyway" he said in a monotone.
