As dawn rose, I awakened to the sweet sound of birds chirping. I swung lightly down from the tree I had slept in and reached into my purse. I changed into a simple silver gown that was much the same as my purple dress. I combed my hair and fastened my Larimar necklace. I then set off into the town.
The town was quiet as I entered it. Slowly, I watched the marvel of a town beginning to awaken. The first spirit awake stepped out of a bakery. He had short, light brown hair and piercing blue eyes. His skin was fair, and he was slightly overweight. I froze, and the baker smiled kindly at me. “Are you new here, young spirit?” he asked me.
I nodded hesitantly.
“Come in!” He exclaimed. “Please. I need someone to test my pastries and you need breakfast.”
I followed him into the pale yellow shop.
He led me into the kitchen, talking all the way. “My name is William. I am a Spirit of Dawn and I simply love to bake. All bakers rise early, so most of us are Spirits of Dawn. Us Dawn Spirits are crossbreeds between Moon Spirits and Sun Spirits, from long ago, before the Feud of the Spirits. What type of spirit are you, young one?”
I bit my lip. “I don’t know,” I answered truthfully.
William set to baking. He mixed dough as we spoke. I sat down at a stool near the counter that he kneaded his dough upon.
“Well, what describes you? Perhaps we can take a guess.” William chuckled.
I laughed along, and then thought for a moment. “I wear lots of silver and purple. I was living with the Dragomir Clan, but I left, as their lifestyle was not for me. I am certainly not a Sun Spirit. I am stronger at night, and I hate seeing innocent creatures harmed. My name is Lily, but I do not care for it. Lilies bloom during the day, and the day reminds me of the Dragomirs.”
“A Child of the Moon! I am honored to meet you, My Lady.”
“What is a Child of the Moon, William? I don’t understand.”
He smiled. “It ‘tis what you are. Children of the Moon are exactly as you described. They have a strong rivalry with the Sun Spirits, love the night colors, and are the gentlest of all spirits.”
I nodded thoughtfully. “That sounds like me. But why would I be stuck with a clan of my family’s rivals?”
William shook his head. “I don’t know, My Lady. But I do know that your mother would not have given you up without a purpose. A wayward Moon Daughter? Someone to be helped, certainly. And someone to be revered.”
William turned and pulled a pan of cinnamon buns out of his brick oven. He set them to cool and returned to the dough upon his counter. I eyed the cinnamon rolls enviously. He chuckled. “You may certainly have one, My Lady, as soon as they are cool.”
I smiled. “Thank you, William. But why do you call me My Lady?”
“You are powerful. Only a very powerful Moon Spirit could survive the Dragomir Clan. I can only offer my kindness and due respect. As for your name, which you spoke of earlier- what is the necklace you are wearing?”
I rubbed the rose between my fingers. “It is a Larimar gemstone necklace. I do not know where it came from, for I have always had it. It is shaped as a rose.”
He smiled. “I am so glad to be of assistance to you, My Lady. Your true name is Larimar Jewelrose. Larimar, as the gemstone on your necklace, and it ‘tis a jewel upon a rose.”
