I kept my chin high and thought of the magic I could feel coursing through my veins. I looked at Jezzine sadly, knowing that I would cause her pain. However, I felt myself slowly dying as my promise lay incomplete. I knew what I had to do to survive. “Jezzine, I release you from your position as leader of the Sun Spirits.”

She laughed. “Foolish child. Who gave you permission to denounce me?”

“The Faerie Queen has asked me to...” I was hesitant to reveal too much. I did not want to give her an advanced warning. “To assist her. I have agreed.”

Jezzine shrugged and turned her back on me. “I do not fear you, powerless one. Power is in magic and fear, two things which you lack.” Confidence in the ‘fact’ that Matthiew was still guarding my power radiated from her.

I ignored her comment and gingerly reached into my bag. I withdrew the Queen’s mirror and focused on the magic that vibrated through me. I felt the glow of power that allowed her to dictate the Dragomirs. I wrapped my magic around hers like a rope and tugged it free. It flowed into the mirror, which now had a radiance as sparkling as diamonds. Exhilaration flowed through me. To use power for good is to know true happiness, I thought dizzily.

Jezzine wailed. She glared at me; venom and discomfort clear in her gaze. “What have you done to me?” she cried.

My euphoria faded. “What I had to do.”
