Stiles's Intervention

I met you when I was a teen but then you were one as well, and I could play a guitar just like ringing a bell. Sometimes I wonder, in any other summer could you have been my part time lover?

By the time the Uber dropped Lydia off, Stiles wasn't sure if he would've been able to catch his friends before they parted ways at Scott's place. He slipped the driver a twenty, and told him to step on it.

As he practically rolled out of the car while it was still moving, he was relieved to see that they were chatting in the driveway. "Guys!" he called, "Please meet me in the garage... Please come here me out."

For a minute, they didn't respond, and he was deathly afraid they would go home. He knew that if they went home, it was all over. This was it; this was the defining moment, and he had to fix things before it was impossible. It was like trying to catch a glass right before it hits the ground and shatters.

Suddenly, Allison turned on her heel and silently retreated to the garage. Scott watched for a moment, admiring the power with which she moved. She was so timid just a year ago, and now she demanded attention without even trying. Without even realizing it, Scott was suddenly gathered in the garage with who used to be his best friends.

"Please, sit..." Stiles unzipped his acoustic case and slipped the guitar strap over his shoulder. In another world, Scott would boo him for this, but it was too tense for him to break the silence.

Stiles spoke again, "Okay, so we're all about to fall apart. I don't want that to happen, but I want you guys to be fully aware of what will happen if we do. So I decided to just show you."

Before his friends could say anything, he was plucking away at his guitar and humming. Every now and then he'd lick his lips in concentration.

I've been spinning now for time
Couple women by my side
I got sinning on my mind
Sipping on red wine
I've been sitting here for ages
Ripping out the pages
How'd I get so faded?
How'd I get so faded?

His voice was soft and clear, and with just the guitar and the stomp of his foot, he sounded like a professional act. He doesn't need us, Allison felt herself tear up.

Oh, no, no, don't leave me alone lonely now
If you loved me how'd you never learn?
Oh, coloured crimson in my eyes
One or two could free my mind

The runs he sang were so soft and gentle that his voice was raspy, but still so powerful. He was scared to death that they would misinterpret this and think that he wanted them to go, but had to do things this way. This was the only way he knew how.

This is how it ends.
I feel the chemicals burn in my bloodstream
Fading out again.
I feel the chemicals burn in my bloodstream
So tell me when it kicks in

Now it was simple. Actually, the whole thing was simple and moving. Without noticing, Scott and Allison were humming along and swaying in their seats. Scott couldn't help but be nervous, because his best friend was killing it, and he was afraid that he would realize he could pull off a solo career. With his boy next door looks and the face he made when he played guitar, he'd have a recording contract in seconds. But, as good as it was and as much as he loved it, this wasn't the kind of music that Stiles wanted to sell out shows with.

Lord, forgive me for the things I've done
I was never meant to hurt no one
I saw scars upon a broken-hearted lover

He looked Allison dead in the eye on that particular line, and she felt the tears threatening her again. What she had done to Stiles was wrong, and it as a moment of weakness, but it was real. You can love your best friend that way, too.
