Emma's pov

I woke up to the smell of pancakes invading my nose and I knew exactly what day it was. I glanced over at my clock on my nightstand and noticed I had ten minutes until my alarm clock would go off, I decided to reach over and click it off. I lazily rolled out of my bed and shivered at the sudden coldness after leaving my warm blankets,  I slowly walked toward my door and then continued downstairs to the kitchen where I found my mom and dad cooking while my brothers were sitting at the table waiting for the food.

"Morning Emma! Guess what!?" One of my younger brothers Toby almost yelled while bouncing up and down.

"Hey T, what amazing news do you have for me today?" I questioned, already knowing what he was going to say.

"The tooth fairy came last night and game me five whole dollars" Toby was new to loosing teeth and he thought that it was so cool that the tooth fairy delivered money in exchange for teeth.

"Yes she did! All my babies are growing up so fast, it seems like yesterday you were all in diapers. How many pancakes do you want sweetie?" My mom asked me while putting another scoop of batter into the pan.

I wasn't hungry at all but I didn't want her to think I was getting bad again, so I quickly thought of an excuse.

"Actually, I'm not feeling too well, I'm probably just nervous about starting school, I'm just going to go upstairs and take a shower" My mom nodded and kissed me on the forehead while my dad gave the boys their pancakes.

I made my way to my bathroom and locked to door and undressed so I could quickly shower. The water was nice and refreshing and helped me relax a little. I wasn't lying about being nervous for school, even though I had no reason to be because I knew everyone since childhood and I made good grades. I quickly finished up and then got out so that I had time to look presentable. I put on my favourite pair of skinny jeans and a Nirvana shirt because they were my favourite band. I brushed my long wavy brown hair and let it hang loose, I then curled my eyelashes and put on some mascara.

"Emma lets go, I have to drive you and the boys both to school today so we have to hurry" my dad called from downstairs.

"I'll be down in a second!" I rushed to my room to get my black converse and my backpack then I hurried down the stairs.

"Here is your lunch, oh and don't forget  you offered to help in the diner after school today. We really have been behind ever since Calum quit." My mom reminded me as she handed me my lunch.

Mom looked stressed, and I felt bad but Calum was going through some family stuff and had no choice but to quit, and as his best friend I had to support him.

"Yeah no problem mom, thanks for the lunch, I'll see you after school" I called as I shut the door.

My dad drove me to school every morning ever since I started school. I never took the bus because I didn't like it being so loud and cramped. Also this way, I could pick the radio station. My school isn't too far from my house but my parents never let me walk. I never asked them why because it's best if you don't question them.

Around ten minutes later, we were parked in front of the navy blue coloured building and my brother Corey and I got out. He was just starting his freshman year here and I'm sure that he wasn't excited about it.
Corey never really talks unless it's an emergency, but everyone in this town knows that and knows how to communicate with him, so it isn't really a big problem.

"Thanks dad, We will see you later, I'll make sure Corey doesn't get into too much trouble"  I joked then quickly rushed off with Corey following closely behind me.

As we were walking in the hall, Calum saw me and made his way over to where Corey and I were.

"Hey! It's been forever since I've seen you Em! I completely forgot your brother was starting 9th grade this year" Calum smiled at us and my brother nodded at him.

"Speaking of starting school-" I started to say until I was cut off

"Hey, watch it! Don't people around here have any manners!?" A boy with fluorescent pink hair complained as he bumped into Corey making him stumble a little bit.

Corey starred at him, with an apologetic look on his face but the boy must have taken that to be rude, his face got red quickly.

"Didn't your parents ever teach you that it's rude to stare? Whatever, I can already tell this place is filled with weird ass mutes" He spit out harshly.

I've never seen this boy before and it was obvious he was new in town, because he didn't know about Corey, so I quickly stepped in to defend my younger brother.

"He isn't a mute, he chooses not to talk. Probably because he doesn't want to communicate with incompetent people like you" I was proud of my insult considering that I was never rude to people, I even received an approving  laugh from Calum.

"Whatever I'm just wasting my time talking to people like you" the boy said as he spun around and stormed off.

I wondered what he meant by people like us, all I knew is that there is a new kid in town and he was an asshole.
