He was six. I was five.
He sat on the swings, staring at the ground. I walked over and sat next to him.
"Hi, I'm Y/N, are you alright?" I looked over at him and saw a tear roll down his face.
"No, Y/N, I'm not okay."
"Well, what's wrong then?"
"Everything. I'm Gerard."
"Hi Gerard. Can you tell me what 'everything' is exactly," I said as I made air quotes. I stood up and walked over to him.
"Not really."
"Why not?"
"Because I just met you."
"So? You can trust me. I can be your friend if you want me to." I was an innocent little girl. I blinked a few times at him and waited for him to respond.
"Okay, I'll trust you. There are these kids that bully me and my brother. It's getting a bit too much."
"I know how you feel. I deal with bullies a lot too. There are these girls who are really mean and they tell everyone to not be my friend."
"We're in the same boat. We should be friends."
"That's what I said! Gosh! So, tell me about you," I told him as he stood up.
"Um, I like comic books."
"Cool! So do I."
"It's why everyone hates me." Another tear rolled down his cheek.
"They shouldn't hate you for being awesome Gerard." I hugged him and told him everything was going to be okay. I told him about me and we said we'd catch up again sometime.

He was 12. I was 11.
Six years later I saw him again. We hadn't spoken since that day six years ago. But I reunited with the boy, I always knew I would.
He was sat on a bench in the same park, tears streaming down his face. I could hear his sobs from a mile away.
"Hi, remember me? Y/N. We met here six years ago."
"Of course I remember you. Are we still friends?"
"Of course Gerard, you're my only friend. There's this girl Megan who hates my guts. The same one from when we first met. What's wrong Gerard?"
"Everything," he laughed a little and looked over at me with a little smile on his face.
"Oh really?"
"Yeah, really. You really remembered me?"
"Of course I did Gerard. We're friends. Friends don't forget each other."
"Good. If you really want to know, I'm failing math, my parents yelled at me, I still only have you as a friend and I haven't seen you for six years."
"You've got it rough. But, we have each other. Don't we?"
"Of course we do Y/N. I've got your back and you've got mine."
"We have each other in this world. We may be outcasts, but we fit in somewhere, somehow. One day we'll find our place Gee. Don't you worry."

He was 16. I was 15.
It's had been another four years, but I saw him once more. We still hadn't spoken, but there he was. On the same bench, his knees drawn to his chest. His cries shook the earth, and I rushed over as fast as I could and wrapped my arms around his body.
"Gerard, it's okay, it's okay. Can you tell me what's wrong?"
"Everything. I'm not even joking, everything is wrong. Please never leave Y/N, please don't leave!"
"I promise, I'll never leave you. Why would I?"
"I haven't seen you for four years. I was beginning to think you weren't real."
"Why would you think that?"
"Because, who'd ever be friends with a loser like me?"
"You're not a loser to begin with. And I'm friends with you. Gerard, I frankly think you're awesome. What happened?"
"Everyone hates me! Everyone!"
"I don't hate you, I'll stay with you through everything Gerard. I'll catch you when you fall. I'll never let them take you alive."
"I'm a horrible person Y/N. Look," he cried as he pushed up the sleeves of his sweater.
"Oh god." In that moment, that was all I could manage to say. "You're not horrible Gee. But I need you to promise me you'll never ever do this to yourself again. Do you understand?" I looked him straight in the eyes and took his hand in mine.
"I promise Y/N."
"Never break that promise, ever. I care about you too much."

He was 20. I was 19.
We met again four years later. But that time, the tables had turned. I had my knees to my chest as I cried in the rain. Everything had gone to hell since I saw Gerard last. My family had thrown me out and while I had good grades I couldn't get into college. It was too expensive and my parents would never pay for me. I still only had a lone friend who I never saw and I missed him. I worried he hadn't kept his promise to me. And to top it all off, I was a hypocrite. Because of the fact that I made Gerard keep a promise that I couldn't uphold myself.
I released the tears. They streamed down my face like a waterfall.
"Oh my god Y/N, are you okay?" Gerard's voice interrupted my thoughts and I leapt up and hugged him.
"I'm not okay! Gee I'm so sorry I'm so so sorry! We need to stick together we can't meet again every five years or whatever I need you permanently in my life Gerard!"
"Whoa whoa whoa! Why are sorry?"
"You know that promise I made you keep four years ago?" He nodded in response. "Well, I... uh-"
"Y/N." He pulled me closer to his warm body. His arms were around my waist and he embraced me. For once he was comforting me. I ran my fingers through his black hair and rested my head on his shoulder.
"Y/N, we should live together. We need each other. I need you."
"I need you too Gerard." I mumbled into his body. "We need each other in this harsh world. Also it's raining."
"I know. It's the perfect situation to do this."
He kissed my lips, softly at first before it erupted into a whirlwind of passion an fireworks.
"I've always loved you Gerard."
"I'm in love with you Y/N. I'm never going anywhere."
"Neither am I. I love you more than you'll ever know."
