I was blubbering like a baby that lost its binky, only worse. The best thing that ever happened to me was dead on the battlefield before I could tell him how much he meant to me. I had the right to cry!

“Wait for it.” Beth said in anticipation, surprisingly calm.

After a second or two, Angel leaped to his feet at a lightning-fast speed and plunged his knife into his opponent’s back, killing him instantly. I was crying even harder now.

Angel was alive. The man I loved was alive!

Hold up. Did I really love him? I’ve only known him for a few days; they were the best few days of my life.

Yes, I do. I love him. I am totally and completely in love with Colonel Angel Harper of Liberal Ground; I am Jesse Salvatier, the son of Colonel Deacon Salvatier of Holy Land. It’s very Romeo and Juliet, but it’s true!

I heard footsteps outside. I rapidly wiped the tears from my eyes to make myself at least half presentable and not like a melodramatic, hysterical woman with twenty cats. It was the red-haired nurse from before I fainted my third time; was it my forth? Fifth? Whatever. I smiled as best as I could.

“I remember the first time I saw him die. I had nightmares for a week.” she said, “Nevaeh O’Dell, Secpnd Quadrant.”

“Jesse Salvatier, Bripac.”

“I’m impressed.” Nevaeh said, “It takes courage to desert to Liberal Ground when your daddy’s their leader.”

“It wasn’t hard, really. I just told them a secret that I’ve kept from them since I was twelve, and they threw me over the Border. It’s as simple as that.”

“Jeez,” Nevaeh exclaimed, “You sure got some mean parents.”

“I know,” I sighed, “but if they hadn’t thrown me over the Border, I wouldn’t have ever met...”

“Colonel Harper?”

“Is it that obvious?”

“You thought he was an angel when he appeared at your side.”

“Anyone could have made that assumption! Plus, I was half right! His name is Angel!”

“Mmhm.”

I felt eyes on Nevaeh and me. I slowly turned to the doorway.

I blushed.
