Damien was the very image of my father, with a strong, chiseled jawline; light green, harsh, judgmental, evil eyes and a face stuck in an expression of pure judgment, always scouting for so-called “evil.”
“What do you want, Damien?” I sneered as he had sneered at me every day of my life.
“Is that any way to speak to your elder brother, Jess?” Damien sneered back.
“Answer the question, Damien!”
“I came to rescue you, squirt!” he answered, “Mom said you were being brainwashed by these...demons!”
“I’m going to tell you exactly what I told Mom.” I replied calmly, “Leave. Us. Be.”
“What did you do to my brother, you bloodsucker?!" Damien yelled at my Angel.
“First of all, the bloodsucking is a vicious rumor. Secondly, I have done nothing.” Angel replied calmly, wrapping his arm around my waist, “I love Jesse; by some miracle, Jesse loves me. We are getting married; he willingly accepted my proposal, and he is going to not only be my husband, but Beth’s second father too. He even told me that he loves it and everyone here.”
“Liar!” Damien screamed at the top of his lungs as he pulled out his gun, “You feel nothing!”
Suddenly, everything was in slow motion. I jumped in front of the bullet before it could reach my Angel. I felt a sharp, searing pain in my chest. I let out a shrill cry of pain. I couldn’t move, couldn’t see, but i could hear.
“Now look what you did!” Damien screamed.
“Me?!” Angel replied, “I’m not the one who shot the gun!”
“Whatever creepy voodoo you have him under that made him jump in the way of my bullet, just stop it! Stop it right now!”
“He loves me!” he screamed back defensively, “He’s my whole life! Can’t you see that? Has your prejudice blinded you for so long that you have no idea of the truth? Now, excuse me while I carry my fiancé to the hospital.”
He picked me up and carried me like a babe to the hospital center, with Beth tagging along.
“I told you he’d say yes.” Beth trilled knowingly.
That was what they were talking about earlier that week! I felt so stupid. Why didn’t I figure that out earlier?
I fell asleep in Angel’s strong, loving arms.
