There, in the doorway, was Angel, with a smug smirk on his beautiful pale face, like a male version of Snow White with black eyes.
“I’ll just leave you two lovebirds alone.” Nevaeh stammered nervously, tip-toeing out the hissing door.
When she left, Angel walked from the door to the middle of the room.
“How much did you...” I began to ask.
Angel ran to where I was and kissed my lips, passionately and lovingly before I could finish my sentence. His lips were so soft, and he tasted like honey and strawberries.
When he pulled away, it was like a boulder was sitting on my chest my entire life, and one kiss, Angel’s kiss, was all it took to lift it.
I was about to open my mouth when the loud, slightly annoying voice of a boy interrupted our romantic moment.
“Hey, guys!” the voice screamed, “Angel found the one!”
“Alonzo, you little peeper!” Angel screamed toward the voice.
Angel and I giggled to ourselves. We didn’t even need to speak. We just stood there, gazing into each other’s eyes. His hands held mine. He brought my hand to his face and kissed my palm.
“So,” I said, “You do feel the same way about me, right? You know, just to clarify.”
“Yes he does, you big buffoon!” I heard Beth say.
“Beth Melody Harper!” Angel scolded, “Be respectful!”
“Sorry, Daddy.”
“I’m not the one you should apologize to, Beth.”
Beth just stood there, thinking.
“I’m sorry, chicken head.”
“That’s better, ma fille.” Angel praised, “There’s still room for improvement, but nonetheless. It’s past your bedtime, mignonne.”
“Goodnight, Daddy. Goodnight, chicken head.”
Beth exited the room, leaving Angel and I alone.
“She’s quite fond of you, you know.” Angel whispered.
I raised my eyebrows.
“Calling me chicken head is what people here call being fond of me?”
“Oh, she doesn’t call just anyone chicken head.”
We laughed hysterically together. It was amazing how I could laugh with someone I only knew for a few days when I could barely crack a smile with my own father. Life is just weird that way.
“You never answered my question.” I finally said, nervous for the answer.
Angel lowered his head and bit his lower lip. His obsidian eyes were fixed to his boots.
“No.”
I grimaced, holding back tears. I should have known that someone as wonderful, brave, loving, and beautiful as Angel would never fall for a loser like me.
“My feelings for you are much stronger, more absolute.” Angel continued, “If you cared for me more than I care for you, you’d be dead right now. The emotion would overwhelm you and eat you alive and..."
That was when I ran into his arms. I let the happy tears flow down my face as he held me. His heart was beating in perfect unison with mine.
Suddenly, as if out of instinct, I whispered something in his ear that sounded like ancient Welsh. I did not speak ancient Welsh.
Angel turned and looked into my eyes. His eyes were widened. He pulled me closer and kissed my forehead. He smelled like gunpowder and roses.
“I knew it was you.” Angel whispered.
I looked into his eyes, which were like black liquid at this moment.
“When I saw you out there, nearly dying, I knew it would be you.” Angel continued. “I never thought I’d find you, ma vie, ma douce, vie éternelle!”
Angel kissed my lips passionately. I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him closer. I felt an aching in my chest. I felt a burning throughout my entire body, engulfing me in flames. I felt the stars in the sky above the tunnels, out of sight, moving frantically as my passion grew. A white light flashed beneath my closed lids.
Then I collapsed.
