Angel and I sat by the fire, his hand on my knee. Two of the other officers were discussing what we should do about my father’s sudden insistence to have me back.
“I say we just give him back to his dad.” Officer Britter Rowland retorted.
“You know we can’t do that.” Officer Avalis Rollcox contradicted, “If we lose Jesse, we lose Angel too; he’s our best fighter!”
“That was when he didn’t have a weakness. Now the enemy could just make an attempt on Jesse’s life and Angel would wave a white flag and cost us the war.”
“Our greatest weakness can also be our greatest strength.”
“Keep talking.”
“If the Holy Man stupid enough to make an attempt on Jesse’s life makes Angel mad enough, he’ll just go over there and snap his neck.”
I suddenly had a thought. It was possibly the craziest idea in the history of crazy ideas, but what’s the harm?
“What if I fought?”
Everyone’s eyes were on me, including Angel, and just from looking into his eyes, I knew his answer.
“That’s not a bad idea.” Britter praised.
“Finally, something we can agree on!” Avalis responded.
“No,” Angel croaked, “I won’t allow it.”
“But Angel...” I began.
“No buts!” Angel scolded, “I need you safe.”
“Please?” I begged, giving him my saddest and cutest face, the puppy dog face.
Angel only gazed into my eyes for a long moment. His black eyes softened.
“I can’t lose you, Jesse. I’ve only just found you.” Angel whispered passionately into my neck, kissing it.
“If I don’t fight, you just might.”
Angel took a deep breath. Inhale, exhale.
“Alright. We’ll start training tomorrow at sunset.”
“Yes!” I exclaimed, jumping into his arms and kissing his face repeatedly, “I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you!”
Britter and Avalis stared at us grinning. Avalis raised her eyebrows slyly. I blushed.
“Welcome to the army, Jesse Salvatier.” Avalis said.
I shook her hand. I just stared into Angel’s soft, obsidian eyes for a while until we retired to our bedroom.
