Stars are only visible in darkness,
Fear is ever changing and evolving,
And I-I feel poisoned inside,
But I-I feel so alive.-Imagine Dragons, "Battle Cry"
Chapter 4~In Darkness~
My body moved before I could process what I was doing. Blood rushed loudly through my ears as I pressed myself against the glass. My legs protested the movement, but I ignored the pain. "Cas!" Horrified, I watched as the other wolf lunged, teeth snapping inches away from his skull. Cas snarled and lunged back at the wolf, but I could see the fear he was trying to hide.
"He's a bit busy at the moment. He can't hear you, or see you for that matter."
I whirled on Claret, anger bubbling up inside as I tried to block out the horrible sounds of fighting behind me. She was doing this, making me watch Cas fight for his life. "Stop this," I growled. "Stop this now." I clenched my fists as I tried to stop shaking. If I attacked her now, I'd be dead before I hit the ground.
Another high-pitched yelp hit my ears and I thought my jaw would break from how hard I was clenching my teeth. Hold on, Cas.
Claret shook her head. "You forget who's in control. Every person in here has a purpose, and well-" she glanced through the window with a smirk. "-it would seem his is almost finished."
My body jerked back around, and the blood. God it was everywhere, matted into fur and staining the pure white floor. It seemed impossible that there was so much and that both wolves were still fighting. From the way Cas was staggering, I knew most of the blood was his. He couldn't keep this up much longer.
I was desperate. I couldn't let him die, no matter what the cost. After everything we'd been through-and he was just a kid. "I'll give you whatever you want, just stop." As soon as the words left my lips I knew I shouldn't have said them, but I couldn't let this continue. Whatever the price was, I'd pay it.
A sickening thud shook the room and I nearly lost it, my head aching furiously as I struggled against an unknown force. "Stop! Get that thing away from him."
"I'm not in the business of making deals with prisoners, Ruby."
My name leaving her lips was the final blow. I lunged forward, no longer caring about the consequences. All I knew was that if Cas died, I'd kill every one of them that stood in my way.
My fingers managed to grasp the collar of her shirt as I snarled, and all I could think about was how good it would feel to kill the woman in front of me. I tasted blood as something sharp pressed against my lips, and suddenly, my body wasn't connected with my thoughts anymore.
My arms jerked uselessly to my sides and my legs collapsed from under me as I crashed to the floor. Then I registered the sharp stinging pain radiating from my back. I was frozen, helpless to stop the electricity coursing through me.
Don't quit now. Cas needs you. If you fail he dies.
Somehow, I managed to force my arm to move, reaching around and ripping the taser wires from my skin. I could feel each wave of electricity travel through my limbs, but it couldn't stop me now.
My eyes fell on the person holding the taser, and I had the overwhelming urge to sink my nails into his throat.
Do it. He deserves everything for watching while his best friend fights for his life. He betrayed you. He doesn't deserve mercy. Not after this.
I slipped past the guard as he darted for me. I was no longer in control of myself. Even when I could feel my whole body ache, it didn't connect. It was like the connection between my body and brain had been severed. Something else was pushing me to fight them, even though I knew no good could come of it.
