Chapter 13~Devil's Voice~
~Interrogation room 223
"I don't know where he is. I haven't even seen him in months!" I protested. I wasn't exactly sure how long I'd been here. But I knew it had been more than a few weeks. Time had a way of slipping through my fingers in here.
Months. I'd lost months of my life to this place.
I forced that thought away, focusing on Claret. "See, I don't exactly believe you Ruby." She drummed her fingers on the table. A sharp beat that made me want to cover my ears. "I'll only ask you once more. Where is John Kitler?"
I sighed, knowing this was another one of her games. But what was I supposed to do? Lie and name off a random city? When she returned and realized I hadn't told the truth, someone would pay for it. I dreaded to think of who she'd choose.
"What do you want me to say? Tell me and I'll say it, but I don't know where Kitler is."
I stared at her as she frowned, "Fine have it your way." She stood up and started toward the door.
I watched incredulously, waiting for her to announce who I had just sentenced to die. I held my breath as she spared a glance at Carmine.
"Go ahead."
She left without another word and my wide eyes turned back to Carmine as he stood up. He wore the same expression he'd had when I tried escaping. That same damn pleading look.
I stood up so fast that I knocked my chair right out from under me. The sound as it clattered back to the floor an ominous one in the silence. I put a hand out, desperately hoping this wasn't what I thought it was.
"Stay away from me." I felt the adrenaline kick in, pushing me to run. I held my ground, forcing the instinct away. There was no way in hell I would run from him.
He took a step closer and I prepared myself for what I would have to do. If it came down to it, better him than me.
Every time I looked at him now, I could only see the ways he'd hurt me. The ways he'd hurt Cas and Shani and Kat. I wouldn't-couldn't-let him continue like this. I had to act.
"Carmine," I gave one last warning growl. One last attempt to stop the inevitable from happening.
He lunged.

~Outskirts of Red headquarters, present time
John Kitler stared at the tree-line that surrounded Red's compound. He'd already set the audio feeds on a loop when they'd arrived. The pattern would hold for a few hours at the least before anyone suspected.
He glanced briefly to the left and right of his position. Eight wolves were here with him, though sixteen in total had been gathered for today's plans. They were still in human form, but he knew they were downright lethal.
The Alpha stood directly to his left, scanning the woods with unparalleled eyesight. "It's time."
Kitler nodded, hefting a small backpack over his shoulder, "It will take time to reach the perimeter. Are your wolves in position?"
The Alpha nodded once, still looking toward the woods. "They're ready to take out the instructed towers. They're waiting for my command."
The subtle reminder of power didn't faze him in the least. He knew the Alpha was only working with him as long as it was convenient.
