"Welcome, Serena."
"Hi, Mrs. Ketchum!"
Oh, Arceus... she's here. Misty thought, sitting up out of bed. She grabbed a mirror out of her bag and checked herself. Oh, great. I look like a Skuntank's rear end.
"Is anyone in Ash's roo- AH!" Serena screamed, seeing Misty. Her red hair was frizzy, her face was red and chapped from crying last night, and her eyes were baggy and dark. "Oh, it's just a girl."
"Yeah, I'm not a Purugly, and yes, his room is taken." Misty yawned, climbing down with Pikachu and Azurill still clinging to her sides.
Serena picked up one of Ash's trophies. "Jeez, someone got up on the wrong side of the bed." she scowled, inspecting the object.
"Mr. Mime!" Mimey screamed, running into Ash room in a rage. He snatched the trophy from Serena, dusted it swiftly, and set it perfectly in its place.
"Hey! What's with that Pokemon?" Serena asked, furious.
"That's Mimey, he's very protective of the Ketchums' property," Misty answered, watching Mimey run back out. Pikachu climbed onto Misty's shoulder and Azurill went behind her. "Now, I have to get ready to go visit Ash."
Serena began to cry. "Don't say his name! It kills me to hear it!" She snarled, storming out of Ash's room.
"Serena, you can take the guest room!" Delia called from the kitchen. "Misty hon, breakfast is ready when you are!"
"Okay Delia!" Misty yelled back, entering the bathroom. Jeez, Serena's being very rude. She's not like what Ash told me at all! she thought, brushing her hair. She splashed her face with water, then looked up to see her eyes. They were all red and puffy from all of the crying she'd been doing lately. Tears forced their way out. Serena hates me. I don't know if I'm capable of saving Ash. I can't help anyone recover from all of this. What am I going to do?
Misty walked into the kitchen and grabbed a few waffles off of the tray that Mimey offered her. "Thanks guys. I'll be back later!" Misty cheered, exiting the house followed by Pikachu and Azurill. As Misty grabbed her bike and headed towards the lab, she could feel a pair of eyes burn a hole in the back of her head. She turned around to see Serena, glowering down at her from the dark window of Ash's room. The Scyther, Raichu, Charmeleon, Servine, and Snover were now joined by Serena the Gengar, cursing her heart.
Maybe it's because I'm a girl in her crush's house. Misty thought, turning back and biting down on her waffle. But, I got him first.
The redhead and the Pokemon entered the lab. Gary and Professor Oak were sitting at a lab table, drinking orange juice. Gary's hair was even messier than normal and Umbreon was extremely alert. Professor Oak seemed completely down as he read the paper, running a hand through his hair. Misty snuck a peek at the headline: "Pallet Town Local Ash Ketchum Mysteriously Dies Near Lavender Town Late Monday Night."
As soon as Gary raised his head to see who came in, he rushed over to Misty and embraced her. "Misty... come sit down." he rasped when he pulled away. He led Misty over to the table and they both took a seat.
"Misty," Professor Oak struggled to smile, "good to see you. I'm sorry for your loss... you meant so much to that boy." He took a big sip of his orange juice and wiped his mouth with his sleeve.
Thump, thump. Misty sighed. "Thank you, sir."
"Y'know, Misty, when Ash came back from Kalos, the first thing he really said to me was how much he was looking forward to seeing you again," Gary said, his voice cracking like crazy.
Thump thump thump. Misty swallowed hard. "Oh, did he?"
Professor Oak nodded. "He kept looking out the window to see if you were coming." he managed to laugh.
Thump-thump-thump-thump. Misty's palms started sweating. "O-Oh."
"I shouldn't've teased him so much about it while he was here, but you two were perfect for each other." Gary shakily smirked, earning a stern punch from his grandfather.
Thumpthumpthumpthumpthump. Misty began to shake. She didn't reply.
"Misty?" Professor Oak croaked worriedly.
"EEEEE-" Misty screamed, muffling her voice with her waffles. A few Parasect-like lab assistants looked up in confusion.
After a mean look from the Professor, Gary cried. "I-I'm sorry Misty, I didn't know that talking about him would hurt you so much! Please don't slap me-e-e!" he whined, begging on his knees to not earn any harm.
Misty swallowed, then sighed. "Oh, Gary. It's just an involuntary thing that I've come to do lately. Don't worry," she stood from the table, grinning at the two. "Now I must get going so I can visit Ash."
Gary stood, dusting off his wet-from-tears lab coat, which was covered in mud as well. "Okay. Do tell him that I'm so-"
Professor Oak clamped a hand over Gary's mouth and tried to give a grin. "I hope you feel better! And don't listen to Gary; he's just been a nervous wreck ever since, well, y'know."
Misty smiled and waved back. "Thanks! See ya!" she called back, leaving abruptly.
The girl got on her bike, making a beeline for Route 1. This's it. The next four days are gonna be really weird.
