Chapter Nine

He missed her more each passing minute of every day. She's like sunshine to his rainy day, a breathe of morning breeze. She was plain, elegant and sweet. She was bitter, tactful and nagging. She was stupid, smart and childish. She was mature. She was nothing. She was everything. She was his life's very first irony.

And any moment from now, if he does not see her, he might just die of starvation. Starving himself of the happiness he thought he deserved.

He admit he had a girlfriend. It was true and Lena had every right to be angry and do what she did. He could not blame her. He should not blame her. Dapat nakipag-break na siya kay Trish. Noon pa man. Trish and him is in a relationship. She loved Trish. Once. But she made it hard for him to remain in love with her. Unti-unti, lumabo ang relasyon nila hanggang sa hindi na sila nagkikita. He thought, what they had was a cold break-up of sorts. Pero dumating na lang ito bigla sa opisina niya, thinking they were still on and that she had every right to kiss him. Nagulat siya sympre. He was taken aback and that was the scene Lena saw. And honestly, really, If he'd totally be honest with himself, nasaktan siya nang marinig kay Lena na after what they shared, after what happened between them, after she gave herself to him, ni hindi nito siya tinuring na boyfriend. Yayayain niya sana ito na mag-lunch but he overheard her conversation with her brother. And frankly, he was hurt. Pakiramdam niya, wala lang rito ang lahat. Buong akala niya pa naman what they had was a relationship that tends to get stronger, firmer. But it was nothing to her. One moment he thought he mattered to her, the next it was all just a joke.

Funny, it was only now that he realized, hindi niya na dapat isipin pa ang mga iyon. May kwenta man sa kanya o wala. It doesn't matter. Basta ang alam niya,He needs to see and hold her.

Kaya kahit may important meeting siya this weekend, he cancelled it. Kaysa mamatay siya sa sobrang lungkot, he went to Lena's unit.

(..So how'd you pick the pieces up.. yeah.. I'm barely used to saying me instead of us..)

"Another glass." Nagsalin ang bartender ng brandy sa baso niya. Nakakalima na yata siya pero kahit sampung bote pa ang ubusin niya, hindi niya na yata malilimutan ang sakit. Ang sakit sakit. Tangina.

(..It gets under my skin to see you with him.. And it's not me that you're with..)

"Ha! Haha!" He mocked himself by laughing. How appropriate the song was. Boy, this bar knew what song to play.

(..I'm changing the way I feel yeah From this moment on.. It's time to get real..)

Get real. All along, he was hiding from himself. He was lying to himself. Niloloko niya lang pala ang sarili.

(..Cause I still don't know how to act.. Don't know what to say.. Still wear the scars like it was yesterday..)

[Flashback]

Alam niyang nasa loob si Lena at naririnig siya. Kahit hindi siya nito pagbuksan ng pinto, alam niya nasa kabilang bahagi lamang ito ng pinto.

Pinihit niya ang doorknob pero naka-lock pa rin iyon tulad ng inaasahan. "Baby, wag naman sanang ganito. Please talk to me."

Hindi niya kayang mawala sa kanya si Lena. Ever since she came into his life, naging magaang para sa kanya na harapin ang mga problema. Nagkaroon siya ng dahilan para mabuhay at ipagpatuloy ang laban. Nagkaroon siya ng dahilan para bumangon. With her, he knew everything's gonna be alright.

Pero mawawala na ito. Mawawala na ito sa kanya sa dahilang hindi niya man lang alam. Kahit ilang ulit man siyang magtanong, kahit kaylan wala siyang nakuhang sagot.

[End of flashback]

Ang saya-saya lang nila noon. Ang saya-saya nila. Ang saya-saya nila. Bakit nagkaganun?

(..But I still don't know where to start, still finding my way..Still talk about you like it was yesterday..)

[Flashback]

Matiyaga siyang naghintay sa labas ng condo unit ni Lena kahit abutin siya ng umaga. Ayos lang. Kahit wag na siya matulog kahit kailan, makita niya lamang si Lena, ayos na. Mahal niya ito. Hindi niya kayang mabuhay ng wala ito. Si Lena lang ang tanging babaeng nagpatino sa kanya. Ito lang ang minahal niya ng ganito, ng sobra-sobra.

"Brod, nakaharang ka sa daan."

Pabalik na sana siya sa unit ni Lena galing CR. Hindi niya kilala ang kumalbit sa kanya. Pero tumabi siya at sinagot na rin ang cellphone. Kanina pa tumatawag si Vonn sa kanya.

"Hello, Vonn." Tanaw niyang nagdoorbell ung lalaki sa unit ni Lena.

"Bro, I've got news for you."

He was half-paying-attention to what Vonn was saying. Nakatingin siya sa unit ni Lena. Sino kaya ang lalaking iyon?

"What?"

Bumukas na ang pinto ng unit at sumungaw ang muka ni Lena.

For awhile there, he thought, He's having his salvation.

"Our long lost father's here." si vonn.

Pero gumuho ang lahat ng pag-asa niya, pati buong mundo niya.

The guy's kissing Lena.

"Bro? Nakikinig ka ba? Bro?"

[End of flashback]

(..No I can't keep thinking that you're coming back..No..Cause I got no business knowing where you're at..)

And years after seeing Lena kissing somebody else, who would have thought that he would see the same scene unfolding before his very own eyes a moment ago?

Maybe she loved him. Once. Pero hindi sapat yun para mapanatili itong mahal pa din siya.

Saddest part is..

He still love her.

"But you're long gone. You moved on." pakikisabay niya sa kanta.
