A few weeks had pissed since that night. I was so in love with that story. Susan told it to me every night, with me never getting tired of it.
Today was James's birthday party. He was turning seven. I was invited to go to his rock star-themed party. I felt special because I was the only girl there. The rest of the six or seven kids were all boys; which I didn't mind at all. As long as I was able to be with James, I didn't care. He was my best friend.
We were all playing tag, with James being 'it'. I was running away, squealing as he got closer to me, his arm out to touch me. James was about a foot away from me when his mother shouted something to us.
"Kids! It's time for cake!" She said enthusiastically.
We all instantly stopped in our tracks, and ran up to the house where all the grown ups and big kids were as James's mom was lighting the seven candles. I had been saved by her.
Since we were all short and small, we all climbed on the chairs, with some of us younger ones receiving help from some of the adults. James went on the chair in front of the huge guitar-shaped cake that read 'Happy 7th Birthday James!' in red icing. I was in the chair to the right of him, with all the other kids around the table as well. His mom got the video camera and began to film as we all began to sing 'Happy Birthday' to my best friend, James. When the song finished, everyone cheered.
"Make a wish!!" I told James in my excited voice.
"Okay!" He replied eagerly.
James thought for a moment, thinking about what to wish for. He then closed his eye, making hi wish. A few seconds later went by and James opened his eyes and blew out all the candles, leaving everyone to clap and cheer.
Then James's mom, Mrs. Diamond, began to remove the candles, and then started to cut pieces of the cake for everyone. When I got my plate with cake, I noticed that it was the piece with his name on it. Surprised, I smiled at that as I picked up my fork, trying to eat as cleanly as I can, saving his name for last. As I ate, I watched everyone around me, all talking to one another, eating small bites of their slices. I looked next to me at James, seeing him eating his slice as well, with about two bites left.
"Hi James!" I said to him, wanting him to talk to me,
"Hey Lily!" He replied, eating his last bite. I was finishing my piece as well. "Are you having fun?" He asked.
"Yes!" I nodded. "Are you??"
"Yeah! This is the best birthday ever!" He said cheerfully.
"Really?? Why's that?"
"Because I have my best friend here with me!"
"And who is that?" I asked with a hint of sadness in my voice.
"You of course, silly!" He said, grinning and laughing.
"Ohh. I knew that." I say, with a hint of pink showing on my cheeks.
"You wanna go play?"
"Yeahh!"
James got off his chair and then went to come help me down from my chair. When I got down, I smiled at him.
"Thanks!"
"You're welcome." He said with a smirk, It got me a bit scared.
"James... Why is your face like that?" I asked confused.
"Because... You're it!!" He said tagging me as he began to run off.
It took me a second to register what happened. Once I figured it out, I just shook my head as I ran after him in hopes of getting him back.
"You're gonna pay James!" I shouted as I chased him. He kept laughing as his seven year old legs managed to make his go even faster.
I kept running until I was getting tired. Then I came up with an idea.
"James!" I shouted at him.
He just kept running around. I sighed and sat down in the grass, acting all sad. I watched as he kept running, only soon realizing that he wasn't being chased anymore. I mentally laughed at that. Once he realized, he stopped and looked where I was. When he found me, he walked over to me with a concern on his face.
"What's wrong Lily?" He asked me.
"Nothing..." I tell him as I stand up. He looks at me then.
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah." I tell him as a smile grows on my face. He looks at me confused, but then soon starts to understand what's happening. Only he was a second too late because just as he was about to do something, I touched him.
"Tag! You're it!" I said as I began to run while I was laughing.
"Hey! That's not fair!" James said as he began chasing me.
I kept running, hoping to not get tagged again. I looked behind me to see he was slowly catching up. We ended up in the woods in the back of his house. Soon I noticed a small abandoned shed house, and decided to run up to it, using it as a hiding spot. James ran up to the shed house, but stopped in front of it, watching me as I was about to go inside. He didn't feel safe here, considering he has never been out here, and was scared that I might get hurt, and he didn't want to risk anything.
"Lily! Wait! Don't go in there!" He shouted at me. I turned around to see a scared James looking at me, hoping I would listen.
"Why not?" I asked a little disappointed.
"We don't know what's in there. I don't want anything to happen to you." He told me as he walked closer to me, the game completely out of his mind.
"We could explore it together!" I told him. I wanted to see what was inside so badly. Being a four year old, exploring was what I did. James thought about it for a minute and then sighed.
"Okay. But you listen to me no matter what. Got it?"
"Got it." I replied, nodding my head vigorously.
We took each others hand as we slowly walked up to this abandoned shed house, not knowing what to expect. When we reached the door, James looked at me, his face with the expression asking if we were ready to do this. I just nodded, reassuring him that I was ready, even though on the inside I was scared probably just as much as he was.
James put his hand on the rusty doorknob, carefully opening the door to reveal what was on the other side.
