the irony of luke's grade twelve biology class makes him grin every morning as he heads there for second period. his teacher is mr. sampson, and michael sits next to him at the same desk for two that they sat beside each other in grade nine. mr. sampson's impression of michael hasn't changed much, as he still does no work, skips class and vandalizes school property. the middle-aged man doesn't understand how his favourite, straight a student luke would warm up to the hard and irresponsible michael.

"okay, so who remembers mitosis from grade eleven biology? you all had to take it to be here, so if you don't remember it then i don't know how well you'll be doing in this unit," mr. sampson begins class, setting up his powerpoint.

michael, without bothering to raise his hand, says "mitosis is when cells divide to make more cells- iphat is the acronym for the stages of mitosis, right?"

"interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase. ipmat, not iphat," luke supplies, smiling at mr. sampson to make up for not waiting to be called on before answering a question. "oh, and then cytokinesis."

mr. sampson looks down at his laptop for a minute before speaking. "yes, thank you boys. okay, so now we'll be going one step further. pull out your writing utensils and get ready to take notes until the bell rings."

there's a collective moan, and everyone except michael gets ready to take notes. he'll copy luke's later to study off of.

after the bell rings to end school, luke walks to his locker as fast as he can without running. once there, luke exchanges the things in his gym bag (backpacks hurt luke's back a lot, and many people at his school use gym bags as backpacks. it isn't as organized as a backpack, but he can make do) for what he needs for homework, checking his agenda to make sure he hasn't forgotten anything.

michael is leaning against the brick wall by the door luke always leaves out of, so he makes a point to go around the school and avoid him. he texts michael- would you be mad if i went home to nap? i'm not feeling well mikey :( sorry- and hops into his mom's waiting car. normally luke goes home with michael and they hang out for a while, but luke forgot that today was his little sister josephine's first day of children's flying school (cfs).

they drive home, and luke jogs into the house. his mom walks in behind him carrying his school bag. she's dressed and ready to go, so she wakes up jo from her nap. luke goes upstairs and has a shower, washing his face and brushing his teeth in the shower to save time. then, he dances around his room to dry off while picking out an outfit.

luke ends up choosing a white t shirt with slits in the back for his wings and a pale blue tennis skirt. shoes aren't really necessary because he'll be flying, but he chooses white converse anyway. he puts on his clothes and migrates back into the bathroom to do his makeup.

foundation, concealer, bronzer, highlighter, powder, eyeliner, mascara, and some blush pink lipstick complete his look- luke always feels prettier with his wings if his face is a bit more "faerie-ish." luke goes downstairs, and he finds his mom taking pictures of jo. she's wearing a purple cotton dress, something cute but cheap. a lot of kids rip their clothes at cfs during the first week learning how to use their wings, so clothes that are cheap are the best way to go.

liz must take over one hundred pictures before she's satisfied, but jo only wants more. "mommy, this angle! get my dress! please?"

"come on jo, we'll be late for your first day! you've already had so many pictures. they'll take more pictures there, anyway. let's go," luke says before his mom can. they share a look, and luke waits for jo to put on her pink light up running shoes before they walk out to the car. "are you excited?" the blue-eyed boy asks as he buckles jo into her car seat behind the driver's seat.

"yes!" jo says excitedly, "i can't wait to see moira and katie and cassie!"

luke grins at jo's excitement. she hasn't seen her faerie friends in almost a month, because liz had been too busy working to take her to the lodge. luke had been spending all his time with michael, which left jo at home and without anyone her age other than mrs. milly's granddaughter, avery, across the street. jo didn't like her because she never shared and smelled like tuna.

overall, everyone in the hemmings household was excited to get back to their family in the forest.
