The next morning, Azir walked in along with Deric, Marcus and Veronica.

He expected the entire 'hallway population' to stop and stare, but it took him a split second to realise they have been completely ignored.

Him and Marcus let out sighs of relief, while Veronica's face lit up as she spotted what Azir thought to be her friend,

Just when did these people find time to form friendships?! I can barely acknowledge someone without scaring them away....

Idiot, it's not everyone's first day, cue mental facepalm.

One thing stood out in a way that crashed the cliché idea of elite academies in Azir's mind. That was the cleanliness, or lack of in this case.

The floor and lockers were covered in yellow posters, even a couple of students had them in their hands. There were crumbled masses getting kicked around, flying about or just chucked at passerbys.

Azir looked to his right to ask Deric what the fuss was about, only to find him and Marcus rooted a few feet behind with their necks craned so their heads faced upwards.

He looked up as well, coming face to face with a dragon that seemed to dominate over the hallway's ceiling.

"What is that?!" He asked no one in particular.

Veronica answered, "That would be part of the preparations for the Welcoming ceremony. It's something like prom, only it takes place on the first Friday of the school year."

Marcus continued, "It's always a masquerade and only the seniors attend."

He plucked off a flyer from a nearby bulletin board and handed it to Azir.

Deric finished their explanation, "The art club would decorate the school based on a certain theme, which has to be cultural, and usually another club that is familiar with the topic would aid. Like when it was Roman year, the History club got involved. When it was Greek year, the drama club."

So this time is Chinese....

Their little group kept walking in silence, stopping every now and then in front of one of their lockers.

Veronica was admiring a paper lantren above her as she quietly said, "They really did a great job with all those little details."

"They had the Techies help, not only are they mostly asians, but their artistic abilites are freakishly good." Marcus commented.

That made Azir notice the wooden blindes on the classes doors, the vertical writings on the walls, the humanoid-shaped dolls in the corners and the bold-coloured fabric frames for the first time.

Deric fell in step with Azir, shuffling quietly beside him at the beginning, only to render him speechless with a single question afterwards,

"So... Azir, need any help deciding who's your date?"
