Ten...nine....eight...seven....six.......five....four....three..two.........two and a half.....maybe three quarters...
I was holding my breathe standing at the end of Jake's drive way.
He needs to know my background, Alec.
One....
I let out a deep sigh and worked my way to the gray house. The porch had dark red bricks with ivy growing along the railing. A welcome mat rested below the door.
One last breathe.
I raised my hand and knocked lightly on the door.
Nothing.
Hmmmm, oh yeah, doorbell.
'DING-DONG.'
I could hear a dog's deep bark get closer to the door.
I waited for a couple minutes with no one answering.
I turned around started down the driveway in relief when I heard a door close behind me.
" Abigail,"
I turned at the sound of Jake, and stopped.
" Ummm, you said to stop by if I wanted to talk," My eyes squinted a little from the angle of the sun in my eyes.
" Is the offer still up?" I gave a shy smile.
It seemed to throw him off guard a bit, like he didn't expect me to ever show up almost, I didn't blame him.
He snapped back to reality.
" Yes, yeah, of course, come on in." He opened the door as I made my way back up.
He held the door for me as I walked through into the entry way of the small house. There was a staircase to my left leading upstairs. The walls were a pale blue color, pictures of him and his dad hung along the hallway. To my right there was a walk way leading to the living room.
I felt a little stupid.
Hmmm....
Jake closed the doors and poked my shoulder lightly.
"If you want we can talk out back, in the living room, upstairs, maybe the dining table? Its up to you, what ever's comfortable." He gave a soft smile.
"Living room is fine." I smiled back as he motioned the way.
The room was painted different, a light yellow color. A pale blue couch,a love seat and a matching recliner chair. Dark floating shelves nailed into the walls, carried more pictures of Jake and his dad but these were different. These pictures had a blond haired women in them with a variety of different ages of Jake. His mother I guessed.
"Pick a seat." He walked past the tv and flopped down on one end of the couch.
I fallowed sitting on the opposite side.
"So, what's up?" His eyebrow raised a little as he sat back .
I shifted side ways so I could face him.
"I need to talk to you." My face felt a little warm.
He sat up a little bit.
"You need to know why I am the way I am.
I looked down at my hands and locked my fingers together, taking a deep breath in.
How do you start these kinda talks?
"Hmmm...I guess it's best to start back about two years ago, freshman year. I was the shy quiet girl, the nerdy one that seemed to get picked on a lot, it did'nt help that I was a giant compared to most, anyway, I met a guy, Alec, he was a junior at the time. He seemed great, he was taller than me and was a real sweet heart, gave me compliments, got me things, little things, nothing fancy. "
