After the conversation Elijah and I had, things got awkward. He would only give me one word answers and he wouldn't look me in the eyes. It was almost as if he didn't trust himself not to tell me what ever it was. I left after about ten minutes of awkwardness. I went home and took a steamy shower to try and clear my mind. I let the water flow over my shoulders and drench my hair. I run my fingers through my long, brown hair. My vision blurs as my hands keep rubbing my scalp.
*FLASHBACK*
Two outs. Last at bat. Last inning. Tied game. 2-2. A runner on third. I'm about to step in the batters box. I wink at Eli in the stands. I put one foot in, tap the corner of the plate then bring my other foot in.
I move my bat in a circle over my shoulder and slowly sway my hips, loading up. The pitcher winds up. The pitch. Fastball right down the middle. I swing as hard as I can.
SMACK!
I fell the vibrations from the contact travel through the bat into my arms. I drop the bat and run like never before. I round first. As I reach second I look at my coach. Her smile is huge. No signals. I look to the umpire. He moves his finger in a circle above his head. Homerun. We won the game 4-2. I run home to my awaiting teammates. I jump on home and am attacked by my sisters.
We say good game to the other team then pack up our stuff. I go out of the dugout, drop my stuff, and run to Eli. A big smile on both of our faces. I jump on him and wrap my legs around his waist playfully.
"Omg! Eli!! Did you see that hit?! It felt amazing!" He smiled. God, he looked so hot in his baseball uniform. Dirt on his leg from sliding. Hair sweaty and messy. Dirty shirt from diving. His eyes twinkle.
"I couldn't have missed it. Your amazing. I don't know how you didn't crack from the pressure of that moment."
I smile even bigger. And look down. He grabs my chin and lifts it up. Sparks travel through my body. I loose sight of everyone else. It's just us now. I'm lost in his eyes. He smiles and leans in. My head unconsciously leans in too. Our lips almost touch but something hits my cheek.
*END OF FLASHBACK*
My hands drop from my head. My mouth is open. I can't believe I almost kissed Elijah. I turn off the water and dry off. I quickly throw on some clothes and sit on my bed trying to wrap my head around what had just happened.
"Ashlyn! Eli is here to see you! Please come down and get him!" Like what?? Why was he here?
"Okay mom!" I run down stairs and see him sitting awkwardly on the couch. I sit down next to him. He looks at me and I look away.
"Honey I'm going to the store really quick okay?" I just nod and she walks out the door. It's just me and Elijah again. For the second time today.
"Ash please look at me." He takes my chin in his pointer and thumb just like in the flashback. He pulls my face so it looks at his. "I have something to tell you. I didn't want to tell you before because... well there really isn't a good explanation..."
"Eli..."
"...as to why i..."
"Eli!"
"What?"
"I had another flashback..."
"About what?"
"A game."
"What game?" Worry glosses over his eyes. "Describe it."
"It was 4-2. I won't he game with a two run home run..." He looked nervous. "I ran to you and... um... jumped on you... and ... um.. we almost kissed." He looked away. It looked like he was blushing. "Eli, I felt the sparks. They felt real."
"Ashlyn.. I came to tell you that I have been in love with you forever and it's been killing me that I couldn't tell you. I knew you didn't remember anything from..." I cut him off with a kiss. I don't feel sparks. I felt fire works.
I jumped awake, breathing hard. That was quite a dream.
