Not Another Teen Drama: Chapter 5

"I can't believe I'm playing Juliet." Karen whispered to herself.

After hearing her name called to play the female protagonist, she instantly felt her body tensed. Her thoughts backfired. Instead of Sam being the lead, she incidentally got it.

She knew the instant her name was spoken by Mr. Spencer that all eyes in the room darted towards her. Of course they knew about what happened before. Paula just isn't the type of girl to keep things private, especially if it'll heighten her social status in one way or the other.

But she knew that it was never true. That was just a rumor made up by someone who desperately wanted to make some drama. Karen doesn't know exactly who but she didn't care less. It even made her realize that Paula isn't a true friend after all because if she is then she'd ask her about it privately rather than making a scene in the cafeteria for the whole world to watch.

She caught a glimpse of Sebastian for a moment. He was just plain uninterested with whatever was happening. Of course, he wouldn't care. But he should have seen the look on her girlfriend's face when her name was called. It was priceless.

Now that's something I'd treasure for the rest of my life. Karen thought.

"I can't believe you'd get to be the lead. That's great huh?" Sam asked her afterwards. After the casting, Mr. Spencer allowed them to have a short break while he's called to the principal's office.

"What's great with that? Have you seen the way people reacted? It's crazy." Nick was the one to immediately point out the obvious.

"So what? It's not like I got it on purpose. Maybe God knew that I was a great actress." Karen replied defensively.

"Sebastian's your Romeo." Sam emphasized

"Duh. I believe we all heard that. So much for you being the lead huh Sam? I can't believe it all went this way." Karen muttered in response. She knew that in some way Sam wanted to be Juliet, of course.

"I saw Paula's face after Mr. Spencer said you name. She turned into Godzilla!" Nick joked

"Ha-ha! Very funny Nick." Karen replied

"I guess this would be a very interesting year for us, with the homecoming dance and the play." Nick grinned.

"I wonder if there's more to add to the list." Sam exclaimed sheepishly.

The room quieted down when Mr. Spencer entered with his usual smile.

"Students, the practice for our play will start next week. Let it be known to everyone that attendance will be checked and that progress reports will be passed everyday of the practice courtesy of our stage director, Ms. Giles."

"When would the play be, Mr. Spencer?" Bessie asked

"I supposed about 2 months from now. So you still have a lot of time to prepare that is why I expect the play to be properly executed and very well presented. That is a challenge for each one of you." The teacher explained calmly. After, he turned to Paula, the scriptwriter. "Not to be demanding or anything, Ms. Schneider, but we would greatly appreciate if the script would turn up as early as this week."

"Oh it's all right Mr. Spencer. I'll have it done in no time." Paula replied smiling.

Nick was just in time for dinner when he arrived at home. His mom had already set the table since she was home earlier than usual. His dad died 5 year ago and since then her mom never remarried and thus had only him for her son. She loved his father so much that she can never accept the though of finding a replacement for him.

"How was your day Nick?" Mrs. Pitzen asked her son.

"It's pretty much the same as yesterday except for the part about the play." Nick answered in between chews.

"And what play are we talking about?"

"Romeo and Juliet. School requirement. I'm casted as one of the soldier who'd die early in the act. Lucky!" Nick exclaimed happily. Same as Sam, he's not into stage acts much.

"That's tragic!" His mom replied.

"Mom, I'm just a soldier. People won't even get to notice it's me. And besides it was supposed to be a tragic story. Even the lead characters will die."

Mrs. Pitzen sighed in reply.

"I'm going to my room, mom. Need to do some stuff for tomorrow. Thanks for the extremely delicious and satisfying roasted chicken!" Nick uttered after putting his plate on the sink.

"Okay. Study hard."

As Nick entered his room, he heard a loud voice coming from the house beside theirs. It was a man shouting at someone. Curiosity made him look through his window to the other house.

He was caught off guard with what he saw. It was Paula and her dad. The man looked very mad and was yelling and glaring at Paula all at the same time. Nick was straining to hear what they were arguing about. He was now seeing Paula's faced and clearly she's crying. Then, without any warning, the man suddenly slapped her hard which made her fall to the floor. Afterwards, the man left the room.

Nick settled on his bean bag and tried to digest what he had just witnessed. Not only did he see a girl been slapped by her father...

it was Paula Schneider.
