With his new powers, the skeleton become the jack-o-lantern of the deep sea. He took up hunting to pass the time and soon became the most feared hunter of the ocean. He used his lights to lure prey; his diving fins to swim after them and his harpoon to pierce right through their gills.

Since he did not have a stomach to digest food, the skeleton would bring fish to the mermaid because he felt sorry for her. Without his daily deliveries, the blind mermaid would have died of hunger as she rarely came out of her cave. It was unclear to the skeleton whether the mermaid had become more docile and tamed over the years or whether, without lights, the mermaid had just been fully depleted of her energy and no longer had the strength to be so quarrelsome. In any case, they started to get along and realized they had more in common than they originally thought. They spent lots of time together and went for long swims conversing for hours on end. They soon became good friends.
