12. Trust Your Instincts
"Morgana!" The sharp voice rang through the small room and I smiled absently, setting down the thin quill I'd used to write my letters.
"In here, Sally!" I called, standing up as the door to the small dusty office swung open, revealing the thin brown haired girl. "You do know this is supposed to be a hideout right?"
She only grinned. "I couldn't find you."
I just laughed. "If you'd bothered to question Percy you would know I've been here all afternoon."
She rolled her eyes. "Percy's out collecting herbs."
"What's so important anyway?" I asked.
Her eyes lit up. "I think I've figured out what Derek is and how to defeat him."
I started forward immediately lowering my voice as I questioned her.
"What? How? Where did you find this?"
She held up a worn scroll. "In the library. It's a kind of historical diary thing. It talks about the times before the Great Redemption."
"And?" I prodded hurriedly.
"Apparently there were such things as Immortals. They're kind of like evil parasites. They have to have a host or a human body to reside in and they slowly wind their way into the person's thoughts until they are entirely under the control of the Immortal. Immortals also tend to inhabit royalty or those of pure blood. They can't have a magical host either, because the magic will war constantly with the Immortal and it would just be a huge mess." Sally explained quickly.
"So that would explain why Derek is so . . . evil." I shuddered. "But why is he obsessed with me? And how do we defeat it?"
"Well, apparently Immortals need another that they love and care for deeply. No one really knows why, but the Immortal will go to any length to get that special someone, and they'll do anything to protect them. That's why he's after you. Apparently, you're his special girl."
I cringed. "That's a scary thought. Nice to know that he will never stop trying to get me."
Sally nodded solemnly.
"So, how do we defeat him?" I asked.
Sally frowned. "That's the thing. Immortals can't die. If their host dies, they'll just switch to the next best host and come after you all over again, except in a new body."
Dread began slowly lacing itself through my skin. "So there's nothing we can do?"
"There may be something." Sally said quietly. "During the rise of the Great Redemption, the strongest sorcerers in the land developed a kind of trap that could pull the Immortal from its host and capture it in an unpenetrable item that will slowly drain away it's power until nothing is left."
"Where can we find one?" I questioned hurriedly.
Sally grimaced. "That's the thing, apparently all of them are occupied and we can't make another. There are nine in existence, each in a separate hidden location. But it'll take a thousand years before the Immortal is drained to the point of death. Until then, it isn't safe to unleash one just to trap the one in Derek."
I let out an agitated breath and fell back down into the chair.
"So, everything's hopeless." I muttered. "We can't defeat him. I'll have to give myself up."
