28. Beware the friendly

I laughed, the wide grin tugging harshly at my cheeks. My feet wandererd instinctively towards my bedroom, though my eyes stayed locked on the form of the grinning boy beside me. His honey locks tumbled over his forehead, falling into his bright blue, twinkling eyes.

"See, that wasn't too bad, was it?" He asked brightly as we stopped before my door.

I leaned back against it. "No, it wasn't that bad."

He chuckled. "You know, I had a lot of fun at the ball."

I smiled hesitantly. "Me too. You surprised me, Derek. You aren't always so icy and demeaning. I'm glad."

He moved to lean against the door beside me. "So, for new beginnings . . . ?"

I shifted to face him, falling on one shoulder against the door. "Let's just say, it was a start."

He copied my position. "A start?"

I grinned. "You've a long way to go."

"Well, I've a long time to try." He replied.

I shrugged. "Not really."

His smiled softly, his stare falling to my lips before returning to my eyes.

"It's long if you count every second." Derek murmured as he gently leaned towards me.

I hesitated, my gaze flitting between his lips and his eyes. Then I quickly pulled back, turning away from him.

Something switched in his gaze, suddenly, at my reaction, almost as if the sweet blue glazed over with a crisp sheet.

He took my hand and turned me back round.

"Morgana." His tone mocked me.

I noticed his stance suddenly, the arrogant poise reminding me so abruptly of what I knew this boy to be. I jerked backwards, stumbling away.

His head tipped to the side as he watched me.

"What's wrong, Morgana?" He asked innocently. "Is it my breath?"

He reached for me again, and I attempted to shove him back, but he only pulled me to him, wrapping his arms around me to hold me in place.

I scowled. "Let me go."

"But that's no fun, is it?" He whined teasingly.

I struggled to escape his arms. "Is this your cruel idea of a joke?" I sneered.

"Whatever do you mean?"

"Stop playing me!" I slumped in defeat. "I can't handle this. One moment you're so sweet and honest and the next you're this! I just don't get it!"

He was silent for a moment, then, "Why?"

I frowned. "Why what?"

"Why didn't you kiss me?"

I exhaled in frustration. "You just don't get it, do you?! I want you and your confusing mess out of my life already! I don't want anything more to do with you! Just leave me be. Goodness, is it really so hard?"

His lips twitched upwards. "But I don't want you out of my life."

I broke out of his hold, quickly brushing myself off. "That's not my problem, is it? Get over me, Derek."
