Bright white light blinds Hide. He wakes up in a hospital with a profound hunger.
"Hideyoshi, you're awake." A voice startles Hide. Pain shoots through his side when he jumps. Clutching his side, he sits up. A fairly old doctor dressed in a pristine white lab coat and a black polo, slicked back gray hair atop his head, is sitting next to Hide.
"How are you feeling." The kind faced doctor asks.
"My whole body hurts but I'm alive aren't I?" Hide responds.
"You must be starving." The doctor says, pressing a red button on the remote laying on the table next to Hide's bed.
"Where's my friend? Where's Kaneki?" Hide blurts frantically. The doctor stands and yanks back a light blue curtain revealing another bed with someone in it. It's Kaneki. A life support mask is fitted to his face. Many machines beep around him. Tubes connected to them are twisting and leading to Kaneki.
"Ken Kaneki. 18 years old. Birthday is December 20th. 121 pounds. 5 feet 5 inches. AB blood type. Concussion. Multiple ghoul related wounds. RC levels 170. Organ transplant performed two days ago. Comatose since then." The doctor reads off a clipboard.
"What did you do to me?" Hide asks.
"Your stomach and left kidney were severely damaged so we were forced to do an organ transplant. Luckily, the girl who was crushed had the same blood type as you and your friend." Fear paints Hide's face. He stares at Kaneki, then down at his hands. 'Am I a ghoul?' Hide thinks 'Rize was a ghoul. She's dead but I have some of her organs.' Kaneki's body begins to seize and machines start beeping like mad. The doctor rushes over followed by a few nurses in mint scrubs. The doctor inserts a needle into Kaneki's arm and presses down on the plunger. A few moments later, his body calms and he's still again. The monitor to his left is beeping at a slow pace, indicating his heart rate. Hide watches from his bed as the doctor checks various machines about Kaneki, recording information on the clipboard that was hanging on the foot of Kaneki's bed.
"I-Is he gonna be okay?" Concern flooding Hide's voice. The doctor nods, continuing to write. The doctor leaves. Slowly and painfully, Hide clambers out of bed. As soon as he puts weight on his legs, he collapses. Pain shoots through his side and up his spine. A white bandage is wrapped tightly around his waist, another around his head. Holding his side, the blonde pushes himself up and stumbles over to Kaneki's bedside. There next to it is a small cushioned chair, which he collapses into. He sits in silence for a few moments.
"I'm sorry Kaneki." Hide whispers. SIlence falls again.
"I'm sorry. I should have never let you go on that date and now look at you. Look at us." Hide says, tears welling up in his eyes. The heart monitor next to Hide's chair picks up pace, the beeps intervals becoming shorter.
"Kaneki?" Hide says, noticing the heart monitor. He leans towards the raven haired boy, taking up one of his limp hands. Kaneki's face is neutral. Gray eyes reduced to slits, hardly open. His shallow breath fogs the oxygen mask strapped to his face. His skin is paler than usual, almost white. Suddenly, his right eyes snaps open, but it's not the kind gray Hide knows so well. His iris an angry red while the white of his eye has turned onyx black. The blonde jumps back, hitting the back of the chair and sending another wave of pain through his body, a yelp escaped his mouth.
"Kaneki!" Hide says, recovering from the wave. Kaneki's eye is still wide. Cautiously, Hide waves a hand in front of his best friends face. His eyes are unresponsive. A few moments later, Kaneki's eye returns to normal. A quiet groan sounds from the raven haired boy. His eyes flutter open. Hide springs to his feet, ignoring the pain in his side. Kaneki's eyes focus on Hide. The injured boy attempts to say something, but the oxygen mask turns it into an indiscernible mumble. The blonde scrambles for the remote, pressing the red button upon finding it.
"It's okay Kaneki, we're alive." are Hide's last words to Kaneki before nurses rush into the room, crowding around Kaneki.
