Forks High School was a collection of small buildings off the highway. The only thing indicating that it was indeed a high school was the sign that stated "Forks High, Home of the Spartans", and the large amount of older cars in the parking lot. Paul's Subaru was among the newest, the nicest being a shiny red convertible parked next to the pickup truck from across the street.
As soon as Paul parked the car the morning fog turned into a light but consistent shower of rain. Percy and Annabeth jogged towards shelter, much to Percy's dismay. He would have much rather stood in the rain than gone inside and spent the day listening to information that would never come up again in his natural life. How were Newton's Laws of Motion going to help him fend off empousai? Or how about knowing the graphs of sine and cosine? That's definitely the kind of knowledge Percy needed to survive as a greek demigod in the modern world. Sadly, he did need to pass high school to go to college in New Rome. Stupid Romans and their need for structure... Percy didn't understand why saving the world couldn't count for high school credit. Sure, going to Forks would mean being able to be in all the same classes as Annabeth, but Percy had missed most of junior year thanks to a extra long nap thanks to his least favorite goddess. Catching up would have been impossible without Annabeth (and some help from Paul too) but he still wanted to get out of any actual studying for the rest of his life.
When they reached a covered area away from the rain, (the parking lot was a lot bigger than it looked) Annabeth elbowed Percy in the gut.
" What was that for?"
"It's raining outside. Take a good look at everybody around seaweed brain."
"So everybody's cold, wet, and miserable. Why does that justify a hit to the gut?"
Annabeth waited a minute for Percy to look at himself and understand what he had said. He, unlike every other student who had to make a run for the school without an umbrella, was spotless. Completely dry. After some confusion, Percy realized this and swore in Greek. He took a step into the rain and immediately was just as drenched as the rest of the students walking (or jogging really) into Forks High.
"You've got to be a bit more careful Perce. We already stick out enough being new. I have a feeling these mortals will watch us a lot closer than everybody in the city."
Annabeth normally would just push Percy into the rain. Or maybe just give him a hug and hope he would get her hint. But she seemed on alert, more so than normal. Percy didn't feel like anything was wrong, but over the years he had learned to trust Annabeth's instincts. Saving your life countless times does that to a person.
After Percy willed himself to be slightly drenched, he and Annabeth wandered around a bit before finding the main office. The office itself was tiny, but brightly lit and warm. The waiting area had a few padded folding chairs, orange-flecked carpet, awards and notices cluttering the walls, and a big clock ticking loudly. Plants in potted in plastic pots were scattered around the room. The room was cut in half by a long counter, full of wire baskets filled with papers and brightly colored flyers taped to their fronts. Behind the counter were three desks, of which only one was occupied. The occupant was a large, red-headed woman in a casual lime green shirt. She had a name tag attached to her shirt that labeled her as "Ms. Cope". When they walked into the room, she looked up.
"Hello! Are you the new students?" she asked. Annabeth answered before her boyfriend even had a chance to open his mouth.
"Yes, we are. We were wondering if we could get a map of the school."
"Sure thing." The woman shifted through a large pile of papers and took out a map. She pointed out all the best routes to get to their classes, and gave them slips to have each teacher sign. The slips were to be returned at the end of the day. She smiled as Percy thanked her. She told them to enjoy their time in Forks. The two smiled back and assured her they would.
