Miracle Horse

Chapter 11

I open the door and yell "I'm home!" Dad comes out of the kitchen with a newspaper in his hand and gives me a smile. "Looks like you guys are a hit!" I run and grab the newspaper from his hands, breathing heavily from all the running I've been doing today. Taking 3 dogs for a walk(Caddie, Cedar and Caramel which isn't easy at all and it turned into a run after a while..long story), running to Hanna's house and then to the community centre and of course home sweet home. I read the subtitle in the newspaper and my mouth opens up in shock. Sunshine Delights, having the lamest name ever, becomes a hit? Sure, we've been getting a lot of emails recently but they were mostly the same people and all from our neighbourhood anyway. Plus, we only displayed that poster a few days ago. It must've been Hanna's magnificent art skills...and my magnificent colouring skills, of course! Dad pats my back. "I'm proud of you, kiddo but if you don't mind me asking what are you raising this money for? You haven't told me yet." My heart starts pounding in my chest. Hanna nor I have told our parents the reason for why we are starting a business because we don't know what their reaction will be. They don't even know about Sunshine yet which is strange, really. So without any hesitation I blurt out the whole story from beginning to end.

Dad stares at me, shocked. "A bet? Are you crazy? This man is a stranger! You don't even know him!" Trust me I don't like to argue with my parents, especially my dad, but if it's for Sunshine then of course. "But she's my horse-" Dad cuts me off. "She is not your horse! I did not give you permission to raise a horse nor I will!" His words sink inside of me making my head spin. For a second I think it would have been better if I didn't argue at all but I then realize I probably would have gotten a similar result anyway. So I continue. "Dad, you just don't understand how much she means to me! She's my horse and I don't care what you say and this isn't a stranger I know this guy!" The last part was sort of a lie. I actually don't know him. I just know that he took my horse. "And he won't take care of her properly! He doesn't even like her! So please! Let me keep Sunshine for a horse's life, Dad!" Dad stares at me and blinks. He hesitates before speaking. "If that's how much she means to you, then go for it. You haven't got much time left." I'm so filled with joy that I run up to Dad and give him a kiss on the cheek. "Thank you so much and I'm sorry for letting you down, it's just-" Dad stops me from saying more. "Don't worry, Amber. I'm sorry too."

I run into my bedroom and collapse onto my bed thinking about what just happened earlier. I'm about to text Hanna but then my eyes start to feel heavy and I drift off to sleep without further ado.

My phone wakes me up. It's a text from Katherine. I groan.

Kathy-Wow. It's been so long since we've spoken. Is there something wrong? You can talk to me about it, you know.

She's typing up something else and I'm about to reply to her text but I remember that I've been givingi her the silent treatment and I want her to realize her mistake herself even though she should know by now, she started this whole mess in the first place. My thoughts get interrupted by another text on my phone. I turn my volume off and read the text in frustration.

Kathy-I'm sorry about Sunshine. Is that what's been bothering you? She ran away but don't worry she'll be back.

I know I am supposed to give her the silent treatment but I can't find the urge not to.

AmberZ-What are you talking about? You and Coty are the ones responsible to send her to that damn auction!

I read through my message about a million times before sending it. My head is about to explode in anger and I'm trying my best to keep my eyes open. Katherine replies quickly to my message and our discussion continues.

Kathy-What auction? We didn't sent Sunshine anywhere?!?

AmberZ-Ugh. Katherine stop trying to act innocent. You know you suck at it.

Kathy-What? Come on Amber, cooperate with us.

AmberZ-why should I cooperate with you?!? You took my horse away!

Kathy-Enough, Amber! We did not take any horse away! Who could do such a cruel thing?

AmberZ-okay but that's what one of the guys at the auction told me.

Kathy-Wait a second. Are you talking about Brady?

AmberZ- you know him?

Kathy-oh yes. He's still working there? I thought he got fired from that job. There must be a new leader at the auction now. He's a big liar I'll tell you that Amber.

AmberZ-...sorry Katherine. It was a misunderstanding.

Kathy-It's cool Amber. Just remember that we as horse riding trainers and stable owners would never send a horse to an auction just like that.

AmberZ-I know. I'm really sorry for all that. Anyways, how is Dawn and the other horses?

Kathy-they're awesome! Come visit tomorrow maybe. Coty needs some help down in the barn. See ya!

AmberZ-ok, bye!

I check my phone's battery and its almost dead. So, I put my phone on charge and rest my head on my pillow but that's when I realize something. If Brady is a liar, then all that information he gave me must've been false! Maybe John Myracle is one of his friends and its all a prank! After all, that name is pretty dumb. Someone like Brady could've made it up. That's when the phone rings. Dad is outside smoking so

I have no choice put to pick up the phone. I almost fall on the floor as I get up. I've never been so tired in my life! I pick up the phone and read the Caller ID aloud. "Stratford Auction" My heart pounds as press the "talk" button on the phone. "Hello?" My voice cracks. The person on the other end of the phone mumbles something so shocking that I drop the phone on the floor and all the batteries roll out as if they're running away from danger.
