I, Hazel Grace, hereby declares that Augustus Waters is alive.

Well technically alive. He made longer than he was supposed to.

This is what happened.

Augustus's mother called me and told me that I should probably come to the hospital. It was midnight. I rushed immediately with no delay. The doctors informed us that it could be today.

I am talking about the day when Augustus Waters would only be a name and not a person.

It was precisely 2am and Gus's breathing was slowing. We called the doctors in, and they told us that it was time.

Gus, however, was unconscious, so we couldn't say our goodbyes. We held his hand and just watched him. The love of my life, his last few minutes, and all I could do was watch him. His features were like always. He was extremely attractive, and although I couldn't see his beautiful blue eyes I knew they were still there, somewhere.

"Do you think there could be a chance that he will make it?" I ask Gus's mother.

"No." She looks at me straight in the eye blinking away tears. "If only there was a miracle that he could stay with us a few more days."

I think of responding, but then Gus shifts slightly.

"What's happening?" I ask the doctor.

"Augustus is regaining conscious. He may make it past today, but the chances are slim." The doctor responds quietly with no hint of hope.

"Oh." I say. I sound like a deflated balloon sinking through the air.

Augustus moves again. This time he opens his eyes. He looks like he is in great pain, but he holds back his tears. This reminds me of the time when Gus first told me he was going to die.

"Where am I?" Augustus questions weakly. He looks around and finally rests his eyes on me.

"You are at the hospital, Gus." Someone responds.

I am too busy looking at Augustus to find out who the voice belongs to. I stare at his deep blue eyes. Gus shifts again slightly. This time he can not hold back the pain and he moans.

"Gus," I say with a smile of sympathy. "Try your best not to move."

"Okay." He replies.

"Okay." I reply back. This will always be our forever.
