The elevator ride down gives me much needed time to brainstorm how I am supposed to get Gus heard.
The elevator rings and I step out of it. The hospital is not crowded, which makes sense because it is near 6 in the morning.
I suddenly realize that Julie took me here and she is still with Gus. This means that I must take the bus home. Great.
I ask the receptionist where the closest bus station is and she says that it's 4 1/2 miles away.
This day is just getting better. First, I have to try to find out how Gus will get heard and now I have to walk 4 1/2 miles to the nearest bus station.
The receptionist smiles empathetic.
"My shift is almost over. I could drive you to wherever you need to go if you want." The girl smiles.
"Oh we'll I wouldn't want to keep you wherever you need to be." I respond politely.
What I'm really trying to say to her is I don't want to ride in a car with a complete stranger. For all I know she could try to kidnap me.
Okay what am I saying? She works at a hospital to help sick children and adults.
I change my mind quickly.
"Yeah actually that would be great." I say quickly, as if my brain is finally catching up to what is happening.
The receptionist smiles and says, "My name is Emily."
"Hazel." I say.
"Okay Hazel, we'll I have about 10 more minutes until my shift is over. Do you mind waiting?"
"No, it's fine." I respond, yawning.
I walk to the waiting area and sit on one of the chairs.
I am thinking of how I will help Augustus be heard. My eyes become heavy and it takes much needed strength to keep them open.
Slowly, my mind drifts away and I am left in darkness.
-
"Hazel?"
Someone shakes my shoulder.
"Hazel?"
My eyes bolt open.
"Wha-What?" I sleepily question.
I realize that it is Emily who is shaking me.
"My shift is over. Do you want to go or just sleep here?"
My body wants to stay and get rest, but my mind tells me that I need to get home.
"I'm coming." I say and stand.
Emily leads me outside to her car.
It is a silver Prius that she leads us to, and the car honks indicating that the doors are opened.
I get in and our doors close in unison.
"Where do you want me to take you?" Emily questions.
I tell her my address and then lean back to look out the window.
How am I supposed to get Augustus heard? My mind wanders for the fourth time today.
"What was that?" Emily asks, looking over at me.
"What was what?" I ask, my eyes crinkling like they always do when I am confused.
"You muttered something."
I realize that I must've said my thoughts out loud. I guess this is what happens when you miss out on sleep. I silently scold myself.
"It looks like something's on your mind," Emily says. "Do you want to talk?"
I weigh my options and she's right, I do need someone to talk to about this. Someone with another opinion to help. I guess there won't be any harm in telling her then.
I start from the beginning.
(Hey!! I updated on New Years! (: it's still January 1st here so sorry if it's not someplace else. I don't know when I will next update (hopefully soon).
