The drive to the hospital leaves me to my thoughts.
Will this be the last time I see Augustus?
What if he went back to sleep?
My unwelcome thoughts get interrupted by the car suddenly parking. I look around and finally realize that we are here.
I step out of the car, and I go around to retrieve Isaac.
The three of us walk into the hospital in silence.
Julie walks up and starts talking with the nurse to find out where Augustus is. Then I am alone with Isaac. He shifts uncomfortably, and I know something is up. Isaac usually never keeps his thoughts to himself.
"What's up?" I question curiously.
"Why do you think something's up?" He shoots back.
"Ok we'll you've been shifting nervously for the past 10 minutes, so obviously something's up." I reply calmly.
"I'm just worried." He says and sighs.
"Why worried?" I ask.
"I don't know. I haven't seen Gus in weeks. It's weird, you know? He's my best friend and I just don't know what to do when I see him." He states quickly.
Isaac not knowing what to say? What has life come to?
"Isaac stop acting like a baby." I scold. "You have known him for quite a while. You'll know I promise. I've known him for a shorter time than you, and even I'm not questioning myself."
Isaac replys with a quick, "Yeah."
Then we are left in silence while we are both waiting for Julie to return.
-
After waiting about a hour, Julie comes over to us.
"Hey sorry that took longer than expected. They couldn't find Gus's name through the server." She says apologetically. "He's on floor 3 in room 354."
I give her a warm smile so she knows it's not her fault it was the systems.
We get up and head to the elevator.
I wasn't nervous before, but all of a sudden I feel like jello. Why am I nervous? Its just Augustus, I repeat to myself.
Yeah but it's most likely the last time you'll ever speak to him. My subconscious adds.
The ride up the elevator I feel myself trembling. I'm almost positive both Julie and Isaac are aware of this; they are both nice enough not to mention it.
The elevator bell rings and we arrive on the third floor. We walk across the hall in complete and utter silence.
346..
348..
350..
I am getting more nervous by the second.
352..
354..
We arrive at the door. I am standing behind both of them as I hear the door creak open.
They both disappear in front of me and I take a deep breath and step in.
Augustus's family are all present and their eyes fall on me as I enter. It smells like the regular bad smelling scent of the hospital rooms. I recognize it from being here multiple times when I, myself was here for my cancer.
I finally let my eyes wander down to the sick boy.
His bright blue eyes are glued on me. I can't believe while in a nasty war with death, he still looks as flawless as always.
Maybe more than usual.
"Hazel Grace." Augustus exclaims. "Nice of you to join us."
His mouth inches upwards into a goofy grin.
My mouth involuntarily does the same.
