thirty-four: the hypocrite
"So have you talked to Niall?" Louis asks Liam, earning a snort from the older boy as he shakes his head.
"I haven't, but I did try. He's pissed at me right now." Liam answers, taking a sip of his drink. He had arrived at Louis' place just as Zayn was leaving. Liam was here just as often as Zayn was for the past three or so days, and Louis had a small inkling as to why. Liam didn't trust Zayn around the twins, which in turn irritated Louis to an extent... Liam was such a dick to his brother, sure Zayn had made mistakes... but he was trying to fix them.
At least Zayn was trying.
Liam on the other hand was sitting in Louis' kitchen instead of talking to Niall.
"I don't blame him, you probably deserve it. You're a huge hypocrite." Louis says, earning a confused look from Liam.
"What do you mean by that?" Liam asks and Louis lets out a bark of laughter.
"You gave Zayn so much shit for what he did to me, but here you are. You left Niall, probably pulled the whole "the baby isn't mine" bullshit on him. You're not stepping up, just like Zayn didn't two years ago. You're a hypocrite."
"This is different."
"How?"
"I know the baby is mine and I'm not exactly forcing Niall to get hitched. Zayn didn't give a shit about anyone but himself where you and those boys were concerned. Not then, not even now. He hasn't changed, and he's never going to."
"People can change, Liam."
"Not Zayn."
"How do you know? You're always pointing out the worst in him, but have you ever stopped to think that he's got some good in him too? He's not perfect, hell no one is... but that doesn't mean he can't change. I get that you don't like Zayn, I've gotten that since we were little... but honestly Liam, he's your brother."
"He's not my brother. He will never be my brother and no one can tell me otherwise. I don't give a f uck if his dad married my mother, he will never be my brother." Liam's voice is void of all emotion and he refuses to even look at Louis as he drinks the rest of his drink. Louis lets out a sigh, shaking his head a little.
"Why do you hate him so much?"
"Why does it matter?"
"Because I would like to know."
"I'm not going to talk about this. I came here to get away from all of that."
"Then you came to the wrong place, unless you somehow forgotten he's the father of my children."
"He's hardly a father."
"And you're any better? You are so much like him that it's f ucking ridiculous. Niall deserves better than this." Louis says, shaking his head in disappointment as he looks at Liam.
"Maybe Niall does, maybe he'll do what you did and leave for two years. Maybe he'll do the what he thinks is the "selfless" thing to do and just runaway." Liam says back, bitterness literally dripping from every word he speaks. Louis scoffs, shaking his head again before smacking Liam.
"I did what was best for my sons."
"By taking them away from their father, the father that has changed oh so much. The father who is still just as much of a dick as he was two years ago. When are you going to open your f ucking eyes and see nothing has changed Lou?"
"Are you quite finished? You're beginning to sound like a broken record." Louis says, glaring at Liam as the other boy finally shuts up for a few seconds.
"I know what I'm doing, Liam. I have made my choice and my choice is giving Zayn a chance. I'm not doing it just for the hell of it, I'm doing this for my sons for when they're older. I get that I was selfish when I ran away, but I was in a situation where I didn't have much of a choice. You have a choice where Niall is concerned and right now you're being a real dick about it. He needs you, whether he wants to admit it or not. So do me a favor and stop yelling at me for my mistakes when you're making the same ones right now. No one likes a hypocrite." Louis says quietly, continuing to glare at Liam as he speaks. Liam looks a little surprised, like he hadn't expected Louis to stand up for himself.
"I'm so-"
"Don't apologize to me, I don't want to hear it. Do yourself a favor and go apologize to Niall, he's the one you should be apologizing to." Louis says, earning a small nod from Liam as he stands up. Louis doesn't see Liam out and instead stays in the kitchen as he tries not to scream. He hated it when Liam pointed out every little thing, laying them out on the table in front of Louis, forcing him to only look at the bad things versus the good. Louis sighs, running a hand through his hair as he does so. He stays in the kitchen for quite some time, only leaving when there was a knock on the front door. He walked to the door, opening it up expecting it to be Liam to say something stupid again.
But it wasn't Liam standing there.
It was Zayn.
