Chapter 3 Breaking the King

Bella's POV

We rode for a day and rested on the outskirts of a little pasture near The kingdom of Rohan.

I was drifting in and out of sleep next to Legolas. I faintly heard Gandalf and Aragorn talking. Gimli was snoring.

"... Saruman fears you Aragorn. He fears what you will become." Gandalf said to him. He looked Aragorn straight into his eyes but he turned away. "He takes hold on Rohan that's were he plans to strike next. The king is already weak. They need to plan for war that is coming. This is where we go next." Aragorn nodded and layed down for rest. Gandalf kept watch the whole night instead of sleeping.

It was morning and we were looking at the kingdom of Edoras, the plains of Rohan.

"Here is where King Theoden rules. His mine is overthrown by a servant of Sauromon." Gandalf said.

We trotted into the small city, riding up to the large building. People were glaring at us with hatred and fear.

"You'd find more cheer in a graveyard." Gimli muttered causing me to crack a smile.

We rode up to the soilders blocking the entrance in.

"We cannot let you see the king so heavily armed." A guard said.

Reluctantly, I gave them my sword, bow, quivers, and hunting knife. The rest did the same, except Gandalf kept his staff.

"And your staff?" The guard said.

"Oh, uh, you wouldn't part a old man from his walking stick, would you?" Gandalf said. The hesitantly opened the doors. Gandalf linked arms with Legolas and slightly limping. I had to control my laughter as we walked through.

There was a grey blanket covered king sitting on his throne with a sickly green man stood next to him. The man was whispering something to the king.

"The courtessy of your hall, is somewhat lessened of wait, Theoden King." Gandalf said.

"Why should I welcome you, Gandalf Stormcrow?" Theoden asked with struggle. The man came and stood I front of the king.

"Late is the hour in which this conjure chooses to appear. Láthspell spell I name him. Ill news is an ill guest." The green man said.

"Be silent! Keep your forked tongue behind your teeth! I did not fall through fire shadow to speak with a witless worm." Gandalf spat. He held his staff in front of him and the man backed away with fear.

"His staff! I told you to get the wizards staff!" He gestured to the guards.

They started to come at us but Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli and I fought first. We through punches to the jaw and kicked them to the ground. One man took his sword and slit my arm open. I held back a shriek as blood poured down my arm. It was deep. I managed to beat the man down in time to see Gandalf de-poison the king.

".... Too long have you been living in the shadows, King Theoden, live once again!" Gandalf yelled. He put his staff up to the kings head while he screamed in agony. A blonde haired girl came running out but Aragorn stopped her.

The king began to look younger and healthier. The women ran over and hugged him.

"I know your face, Eóywn." He said. She smiled and hugged him more.

Theoden threw Grima down into the steps, raising his sword, but Aragorn stopped him again.

"All hail King Theoden!" The crowd roared.

Eóywn insisted on tending my arm, after telling her I was fine. But it stung serverly. She washed it with water and wrapped cloth aroud it.

"Thank you." I muttered to her.

"My pleasure." She smiled. She walked over and tended two little children with blankets.

"The had no warning. They were unarmed. Now the Wild Men are moving through the Westfold, burning as they go." She said.

Me, Legolas, Aragorn, and Gimli looked at eachother with concern.

"This is but a taste of the terror that Saruman will unleash. All the more potent for he is driven now by fear of Sauron. Ride out and meet him head on." Gandalf spoke to Theoden.

"Draw him away from your women and children. You must fight." Gandalf continued.

" You have 2000 good men riding north as we speak. Éomer is loyal to you. His men will return and fight for their king." Aragorn said.

"They will be 300 leagues from here by now. Éomer cannot help us." Theoden replied.

"I know what it is that you want of me, but I will not bring further death to my people. I will not risk open war." Theoden continued.

"Open war is upon you whether you like it or not." Aragorn said.

" When last I looked, Théoden, not Aragorn, was king of Rohan." Theoden replied annoyd. I scoffed lightly, then turned my attention to Legolas. He was standing politely next to Aragorn. He turned his head and smiled sympathetically. I walked over and hugged him. He wrapped his warm strong arms on me and I basically melted when he kissed my head.

"How's your arm?" He asked with concern in his voice.

"It's deep but I'm fine." I said. He gave me a stern look not believing me. I sighed and rolled my eyes.

"Fine. It really hurts but ill still be able to fight." I reassured him. Aragorn decided to jump into the conversation.

"Are you sure about that? Can you use your sword?" He asked not beliveing me either. I pulled my sword from my sheath and grasped it in my hand.

"Yes." He came at me but I blocked him with my sword. Instead of the swords clinking, I cried out in agony.

"Bella, you cannot use your sword intil it is healed." Aragorn said with sympathy.

"No! I'm not as good with my bow! I have to use the sword!"

"Your gonna have to use your bow instead." With that he walked out.

I gave Legolas one last glance and walked the other direction, furious at Aragorn.
