Chapter 13: The past is the past

Hey, author here! So this is one of the chapters I love, even though it's about Gray...
But it really was a chapter that gave me the idea to make this story.
So yeah! Hope you like it! I do hope you love flashbacks too!

Gray's P.O.V

I'll never forget that day. In fact it's impossible to forget such a day-if you were in my shoes.

--flashback (at 10 years old)--

"Mom, is it ok if I go and hang out with my friends?" I asked as I leaned against the wall mom's desk was faced to. She stood up from her chair and smiled at me.
"Yes, my child. In fact I have to go to the beach soon," Mom replied as she looked out the window. Mom recently had to go to the beach a lot. She had to discuss with the mer-people to keep the country safe.

"Thanks mom!" I exclaimed and ran out the door. I heard from inside the room a "be safe!" from her.

She should have been safe.

"Natsu! You threw the ball too far!" I shouted as I heard a "thump" from behind the big gate.
Me, Gajeel,and Natsu were playing catch with my small yet light blue ball. Though Natsu had thrown the ball over my palace's front gate.

"So what? Wasn't that awesome~?" Natsu exclaimed as he praised himself.

"What are you doing with my ball, birdbrain?" I asked as I got closer and glared at him.

"Just having fun like usual, ice-cube," Natsu replied as we knocked heads against each other.

"Are you planning to kiss or something? Cause we won't get anywhere by doing this," Gajeel said as he I interrupted our fight. Me and Natsu stepped away from each other and decided to stare at him.

"What? You think you're smart or something? Cause your acting like my mom," Natsu said as he sweat dropped.
True... Natsu's mom does act so tough, huh...

"No! I'm just saying th-" Gajeel got interrupted by guard who came rushing in.

"Prince Gray!" The guard said as he knelted down before me, "your mother requests that you... Come immediately... She wishes to speak to you,"

The guard looked back up at me as he showed me his pale face,
"It's an emergency."

I don't get it... What could mom possibly want in a situation like this? What could I possibly do in their 'discussion with the mermaids'?

"Ok... I'll come... " I mumbled. The guard led me to the way to the chariot. Natsu and Gajeel looked confused and worried as the horses started moving, bringing the chariot along the way.

When we made it to the beach, I quickly got off and started racing towards the shore. I looked everywhere for mom.

"Mom?!" I shouted as I looked towards the ocean. There I spotted something which should have never happened. Never...

No... It can't be...

Gun shots. Water at full power. Wounded people. Angry mermen. Mom, wounded and dying.

No! Nononononononononono..

"MOM!!!! MOMMM!!!" I screamed as I ran towards her. I fell to my knees and looked at her dying face. She smiled and looked at me.

"Y...you c-came..." She managed to choke the words out.

"What's going on?! Why are they fighting us?!" I shouted.
