Shatter

Every limb in her body aches. The rhythm of her feet pounding against the cement helps her focus. She ignores the burn of her lungs and pushes forwards. Her long hair falls into her vivid green eyes. Her grasp on reality is a thin thread. And she is scared that she will fall...

She recalls Aiden in her mind as her feet pound in the cement. He seems to be the only one she can trust, as everyone falls beneath her finger tips. He had half heartedly agreed to letting her go for a run. Claiming it would be "too dangerous". She could take care of herself. Even though she knows this is half false. She loves the way she feels safe and protected when she is with Aiden. He is her anchor. And visa versa.

But she tries to ignore the person that seems to nag at the edge of her mind. A dull ache, she isn't sure would ever go away. She feels like a stranger in her own skin. The lies of her past compile on her skin making it near impossible to breathe under the layer that seems to suffocate her. She tries to ignore it. And pushes it to the back of her mind. Even though she knows she will never be free from the weight that makes it near impossible to breathe.
As her feet throb against the cement she looks across the park admiring the fresh green grass and purple blooming flowers.

She doesn't know how or why. It just happens.

The force seizes her body. Claiming her for its own. It spreads through her body like sticky glue. Twisting and engulfing her body. She feels like she is loosing control, as a numbness spreads through her head. What is this!? she thinks. Her thoughts slow and become laboured as if she is asleep. But then she hears it. A voice. But not any voice.... Hers.

"Push him." She whispers. Venom coats her voice with an underlying note of hatred.

Her eyes flit to a middle age man standing in front of her. It was as if this was an evil side of her. Awakening. Even though she knew it absolutely couldn't be.

Could it?

Her body gives up a fight but the voice only nags and persuades.

"You must. Don't kill him like you almost did to mum though..." The voice slurs.

"Hope. You were never good." It tempts "You must."

"Do it."
"Do it." The voice screeches.

She knows it will never stop until she does what it asks. Closing her eyes against the world. She runs at the man, arms outstretched. She grunts as her body falls limply under the man as she falls on the cement. The man grunts and swears under his breath.
She opens her eyes to see the man lying on the cement. Blood trickles from his cheek.

What have I done? She thinks as the voice in her mind quietens.

But the only thought she is left with sends her blood running cold...

"You kill them all.."

Fresh tears spring to her eyes as she opens her mouth to apologise to the poor man.

"I'm so sorry. I don't know what happened." She wails as the man sits up groggily.

The man grunts,"That's alright dear. Just an accident."

But the mans voice doesn't reassure her. It loads her with guilt.

She didn't mean to. She had no choice. But she wasn't sure it was an accident.

****

After she helped the man up and he had cleaned his face, she apologises for the hundredth time. The man only shrugs vaguely at her.

"I promise I'm quite alright dear." He says warmly.

Hope sighs.

"I truly am alright. You better get home now. Your boyfriend or someone is probably missing you." He says warmly again.

"Are you sure?" She says cautiously.

"Yes. By now dear." He says.

Things are uncertain. She doesn't have the answers she's looking for. But she doesn't need this new distraction. She pushes the voice to the back of her mind and starts sprinting down the cement, attempting to erase all bad memories and worries.

But what she doesn't know... Is that decision to neglect this information will change her life..... FOREVER...

To be continued...

They say hearing a voice in your head is bad. Very bad. They say it is a bad omen. They say it can bring misfortune... What will the consequences be for her choices and mistakes though? Is she willing to pay the cost?...
