Chapter Five- It
I felt stronger, better. The new, fresh blood pounding through my veins made me feel almost invincible.
I felt alive.
My ears were pricked, my green eyes surveying the land, feeling the deep rumbles in the earth of both the enemy as well as friend.
The disgusting scent of powdered metal hit me- guns. Guns and knives and the blood of the enemy. And I would not let them hurt my master this time.
Protect him. He whispered softly, his soothing voice calming the anger that bubbled up in my stomach. Don’t let him know you failed at all.
I won’t. I promised solemnly. He had always been there for me, taking over even when I begged him not to. He knew when to keep me down and when to let me out. He’d been the favored one, the one everyone liked.
He was also the broken one.
He was the one that soothed me, even when he was hurt. He was the one that taught me, told me to relax. He taught me about living. He taught me patience and the extent of my strength and courage and acceptance. He was the one there for me.
Now was my chance to be there for him.
The rumbles got louder and the men my master had sent along with them went silent. Quickly, I leapt up into a tree, tucking my tail close to my body and digging my claws into the soft bark.
I had changed into my true form, the truest of hybrids. As this, I was truly half-cat and half-human.
While I had a six-foot stature, I was nimble, with furred paws and sharp, three-inch claws escaping their blackness. My feet looked no different, having had changed to give me a better form. My bone structure changed to more of a cat so I could move quicker and more efficiently, but I still had human features. His features. The ones that everyone, including me, loved.
My eyes, changed into their natural green and now having better sight, scanned over and under the trees, searching for other signs of life.
And here they came. Midnight was upon us, (A/N I hate doing these, but it was literally midnight when I wrote this.) the bright full moon shining down on the battlefield.
Silence.
And then the first attacker came into view.
My master’s men kept low and crouched, as did I, waiting for the chance to strike.
Once the last man had made it past the first, we attacked. Launching myself from the tree, I landed on a man, my claws digging deeply into his neck, opening his jugular vein as well as snapping his neck at the same time, the loud POP lost in the sounds of surprised cries and guns, groans of men in pain and my snarling.
Still, I could detect no hybrid within the sudden scent of blood, but that didn’t make me relax. Instead, I attacked mercilessly, not caring if blood splattered onto my fur and face, only caring about protecting my master.
Just as I snapped another man’s neck, a snarl came from nowhere and I quite literally moved out of the way a second before a dark figure flew through the air.
Before the attacker could regain themselves, I attacked, digging in my claws wherever I could see flesh and snarling back, listening to the howls of pain that the hybrid under me released.
It was a hybrid, a large, bulky dog hybrid. But he was losing.
Like I had the man not moments before, I snapped his neck as well, ending his life. He fell to the ground, limp and bloody.
