Chapter Six- An Explanation

After we’d gotten inside, Liam, Harry, and Niall had gasped in horror, clearly seeing the blood all over me, more of it from my enemies- and Josh.

Right now, I was sitting on the bed, curled up next to Harry as he threaded his fingers through my now-clean hair.

Once we’d gotten upstairs, Harry and Liam had stripped me down while Niall washed the blood off, as well as gently cleaning my wounds, bandaging them up and finally releasing me from the bathroom.

Niall was sitting on my other side while Liam was at the front of the bed, staring at me. He was waiting for me to explain what happened, but I was nervous and scared. What if they sold me back to my ex-master? Or to an even worse one, or sent me back to- no. Don’t think about that. He gently commanded.

There was a reason I protected him, a reason that I kept him down. The reason was the outside world. He was a fighter, a free spirit, and it would’ve killed me to see him broken, like I was. So instead, I kept him hidden and a secret. It was safer this way.

“Zayn- what happened out there?” Liam asked softly as Harry scratched my ears lightly, his fingers running over the wounds Josh had left.

I whimpered softly in reply, still scared.

“Whatever it was- or is- we won’t hurt you for it, Zayn.” Niall rubbed my back once, his thick Irish accent lacing through his words.

Slowly, I sat up, curling up into myself, playing with the tip of my tail.

“A long time ago, a man, James Halloway, formed a close bond with a cat. It was such a close bond, that one day the cat and James literally bonded into one body to become the first, true cat hybrid.”

“What about the dogs?” Harry asked. I could feel his chest rumbling with the words.

“Another man, Ethan Winthrow, had bonded with a dog and out came the same result. Both James and Ethan were taken into a hospital for testing before being sent off to a secret location. Azkaban, I believe. They never saw each other again, and that’s all I know about the dog hybrid story.”

“James was tested on for years. Finally, they paired him with a woman and she successfully gave birth to a cat hybrid, similar to James. The baby, a girl, after coming to age at twelve, was forced to pair with her father and the result was another girl, but this time, less human. They paired James and his daughter again and this time it was a boy, but also less human than his mother.”

“Over the generations as the scientists in Azkaban began to get more human results than animal, they paired a couple from the same bloodline. The baby seemed human, but later on they found out that the child could pretty much ‘change’ back and forth from a cat to a human. I think the same thing happened with the dogs but somehow… different. This baby, this child, was the first of few who would receive this gift. That child was my great-great grandfather.”

“So you can do it too!” Liam exclaimed. I nodded.

“But it’s more complicated than you think. See, the cat from James’ time still lived on in everyone, but few had the strength to handle both cat and human. Basically what I’m saying is that I have two souls in my body. My cat, and myself. That’s why there are so few many of us in the world. We don’t have enough mental strength to keep the both of us alive, and instead, the cat dies leaving the human with cat features, but with no cat soul.”

“But how does that work?” Liam asked. I averted my gaze, flicking my ear towards the door.

“That’s what we go do in secret. We don’t only shut down half our brains, we shut down half of our body. We do it in private because it’s a long, painful experience and most humans would panic, because half the things you freak out about are normal for the… change… from a true cat hybrid to the common ones you see today.”
