Chapter Two
"This fucking sucks." Eshe grumbled under his breath, taking a sip of his ice tea as he settle back into his cousins couch. He let his eyes wander around Lauren's decent size apartment before looking to his cousin who sat staring at him with questioning eyes. They stared at each other, Eshe arched an eyebrow in question, Lauren shaking her head in response then they stared at each other some for a while longer til Eshe finally gave in. "It's obvious you want to ask me something, so just ask it."
"I'm just curious why you're making this so hard on yourself, Esh." Lauren stated, obviously not meaning it as a question but clearly wanting an explanation. She sat back in her seat crossing one leg over the other before crossing her arms across her chest. She looked smug and if not for the fact that she were family Eshe would have considered smacking the look off her face, but he could never do that to Lauren.
She was irritating at times, yes, but she was there for him all the time. And that beat any and all of her annoying behavior. She was the only person he'd ever trusted with his biggest secret, even if she only knew half of it. Lauren prodded him from time to time about getting more information on said secret but she kept it none the less. Even when Eshe refused to give her more details about it.
"I can't tell Jerome, just like I can't tell Alice, it would just be too much." Eshe sighed setting his ice tea down on the coffee table, fighting the urge to go rummaging through Lauren's cabinets for something much stronger. Instead he sat forward, elbows on his knees, as he contemplated the choices he had. They all seemed wrong.
"You, me, Alice and the rest of our family knows that the reason Alice is hostile towards Jerome is because she knows absolutely nothing about her real father." Lauren stated uncrossing her body and leaning forward. She took Eshe's hand in her own despite how awkward holding hands was because of how they were sitting, she locked gazes with him for a moment before saying what they were both thinking. "You can fix that."
"I told Alice, and Jerome, that it was a one time thing, that I didn't even know the mans name."
"And we both know that's not true."
"Well that's what I told them." Eshe seethed pulling away from his cousin's grip, standing to leave he huffed slightly at Lauren's implication that he tell Alice or even Jerome anything about Alice's father. He couldn't do that, wouldn't do that, there was no way he could tell them. He couldn't because that would mean confessing to lying to Jerome for the whole of their four year relationship. Much less confess to lying to Alice her whole life.
And he couldn't even bare to imagine what she would think of him, especially when she realized everything he'd really taken from her. Shaking his head he moved towards the door his long leg moving quickly but not as quickly as his cousin. Lauren launched herself past him, plastering herself to the door as she stared at him almost daringly.
"You're being stupid." She accused jamming her finger into his chest, her force causing him to stumble back slightly. He stared down at her in awe of her audacity but she didn't budge, grinding her teeth together she stayed plastered against the door refusing to give. "Don't, I'm telling you don't. Why are you so determined to make this mistake. I kept your secret Eshe, for years and I love you like my sister so I'm asking you, don't walk out of here and make this mistake."
"You don't understand, you don't know what I did." Eshe replied taking a slight step back as he heard his own voice wavering.
"I know I don't know the whole story, Eshe, but I know what keeping this secret has done to you. I know you're scared of what this will do to you're relationship with Jerome. And I know you think Alice will never forgive you." Lauren sighed moving away from the door slightly to place a hand on Eshe shoulder. "But I know Alice will love you no matter what and I'm here for you through everything else."
