Chapter Six:
Maxine frowned slightly as Alice squeezed her hand in her own far tighter than necessary. They walked along the sidewalk heading toward Maxine's home just as they did every Tuesday after school. It was less than a ten minute walk when they cut through the park so both of their parents had thought it was okay although it had taken awhile for Eshe to stop worrying over the idea.
"Stop squeezing my hand." Maxine frowned but didn't pull her hand away, they always held hands walking but today Alice seemed to be somewhere else. She'd been a little off the entire day but Maxine had chosen to ignore it as Alice usually came to her and told her about her problems without her having to ask, it had been that way ever since they became friends a year ago. "Is something wrong?"
"Uh, maybe." Alice replied looking around, Maxine looked around too curious if there was something that was making Alice uncomfortable but there was nothing save a few neighborhood moms standing on corners making sure kids got home safely, but nothing out of the ordinary. She looked back at the younger girl tilting her head slightly as Alice continued to look around.
"Alice?" Maxine scowled yanking her hand away. The girl stopped walking staring at each other for a moment before Alice sighed and looked down at Maxine's shoes. "Just tell me what's wrong."
"Well, I, uh, I think I made my mom sad. I just wanted to know about my dad but when I asked mom he looked so sad and I think I wasn't supposed to ask." The girls stood in silence again, neither one really knew what to say. It was on the tip of Maxine's tongue to say that Eshe wasn't like that and she knew he would never ben angry for Alice asking such a question but she wasn't sure if she should say that. She knew from experience sometimes even with a persons own mother there were just somethings they regretted and didn't want to talk about.
Maxine shook her head, pushing aside that thought, Eshe wasn't like her mom, Eshe was like her CiCi. He wanted the best for Alice like CiCi always reminded her he wanted the best for Maxine. She tried to think what CiCi would say at a moment like this a sudden idea forming in her mind causing her to excitedly grab Alice's hand. Yanking at her best friends hand as hard as she could she forced them into a run.
"Wh-what's wrong? Why are we running?" Alice panted as she struggled to keep up with Maxine but she got no answer. Only a slight smile tossed over Maxine's shoulder, that was good enough for Alice though she trusted Maxine. Soon they were rushing through the lobby of Maxine's apartment complex only stopping when they got to the elevator, giving Alice enough time to catch her breath as they waited for it to arrive. "Um? Why did we have to run?"
Maxine shrugged her shoulder, stepping into the elevator as it opened before them, she'd actually knew that there was really no reason for them to run when she'd took off but she had just thought it was a good idea anyways. Alice stared at her as the elevator took them up to the top floor but Maxine refused to give in to what she had planned. Instead she stayed silent turning to the back of the elevator, knowing it would open on the other side when they arrived. She stepped off the elevator pulling a small card from a side pocket in her book bag shoving it in the door.
"I'm home!" She yelled out as the lock slid back and she was able to turn the handle effectively flinging the door back. She stepped into the living room finding her stepfather sitting on the large white couch, his ear buds dangling from his one hand, ridiculously loud music poured from them.
"Hey you two." He smiled at them, pushing some blonde hair back behind his ear before picking up his phone from the coffee table in front of him turning the music off. He waved them over to the couch as he began clearing the coffee table of his large textbooks and paperwork so that he could help them with their homework. Cyro, or CiCi as Maxine usually referred to him, helped them with Math and Science homework on Tuesdays and Thursdays while Eshe usually helped them with English and Sign Language Mondays and Wednesdays. It was a system that Eshe had suggested when he learned that Cyro was still in college early that year.
"Alice is upset and I think she should tell you why." Maxine blurted out as she dumped her book bag on the floor next to the table causing Cyro to stare at her stunned. After a moment he turned and looked at Alice arching a delicate brow at her waiting for her to ask her question. She opened and closed her mouth a few times her concerns on the tip of her tongue but couldn't seem to get the words out, eventually she just turned to Maxine who sighed but supplied the information instead. "Alice told me she hurt her mom's feelings because she asked about her dad so now she thinks her mom is sad."
"Oh, I see. Well don't worry about that Alice, it's completely normal to want to know both of your parents and I'm sure your mom knows that. It may have upset him because he doesn't know where your dad is or because there might be something a little to complicated to explain to you now, but he's not upset with you, okay? Eshe loves you very much he would never be upset with you"
"But if I didn't say it, he'd still be happy." Alice mumbled looking down at the carpet finally dropping her book bag next to Maxine's.
"You mother is an adult Alice, he knows whats best don't feel bad its not your fault." Cyro sighed shaking his head standing up suddenly, grabbing his phone off the table he moved towards the kitchen. "I'm going to call Eshe right now so you two can talk about this when he comes to get you, but you didn't do anything wrong Alice, you have to know that okay?"
"Uh, yeah." Alice nodded, smiling slightly as she began to pull out her homework setting it next to Maxine's homework on the coffee table. Maxine smiled at her as she settled down on the floor next to her, leaning against her best friend with a goofy smile on her face. She could hear Cyro's hushed voice coming from the kitchen as he talked to Eshe. Alice tried not to listen in on the conversation, turning her attention to her homework instead but she couldn't help but feel slightly better about what would happen the next time she saw her mother.
