Hi chicas and chicos! So today's update is a scary story I wrote in my ELA class. I don't celebrate Halloween, but I need to update. Enjoy the story. 😈

The Pumpkins
                        by: Damaris Martinez

"BOO!" someone behind me shouted. I turned around
to none other than my best friend, Jake Nolasco, and his little 6-year-old sister, Gwen. Even though Jake was 13 like me, he acted so childish and playful. I giggled, and rolled my eyes. Jake chuckled, and rolled his own blue eyes, which were the same color as the sky. We looked at each other, turned away, and looked at each other until.... "Stop with the nasty lovey-dovey stuff, and let's start trick-or-treating!" Gwen shrieked, her voice dripping with excitement, and her aquamarine eyes sparkling. Jake chuckled. "Well Gwen, we're still waiting for everyone else, so settle down." he replied. I laughed, and then admired their costumes.

Jake was wearing purple jeans and a lavender trenchcoat
with a green shirt, and a wild, grassy green wig. His face was painted white, and red lipstick was smudged on his lips and on some parts of his cheek. His eyebrows were also painted green. Gwen, on the other hand, was wearing black flats, black and white striped tights, and the same dress that Alice wore in "Alice in Wonderland". I smirked. "So Gwen, you're 'Alice', and Jake...you're...'The Joker'?" I ask curiously. Jake lets out a laugh, and replies, "Why yes, Alexandra. What are you though?" I feel my cheeks heat up, and I look down to my costume. Tight, black leggings, pink jacket- "Pink Ladies" written across the back-, a black bow on my ponytail, and black flats. "I'm a 'Pink Lady' from the movie 'Grease'." I respond with a grin. "Look! They're coming!" Gwen exclaims, pointing behind us. We turn around. Here they come.

Caleb Peralto, Jake's friend, was dressed as Captain America,
his wild, blonde hair under his cool mask. Rebecca was dressed up as Black Widow from "The Avengers". Her clothes added an interesting look to herself, which was great. Becca, the nickname made for her by us, had straightened her brown hair, which was on her shoulders. As for Chloe... "Hey Jakey! Like my costume?! I'm a supermodel!" I sigh. 'Get ready for a few hours of Chloe's obnoxiousness, Alexandra,' I thought. Chloe was wearing a skin-tight black dress and red high heels that made her look taller than the rest of us. Her shiny, black hair was curled. The thing that was bothering me was the fact she reeked of hair spray. At that thought, I stifled a giggle, and looked at Jake, who seemed like he was gonna explode with laughter. "Yes Chloe. I LOVE your outfit," Jake replied a little sarcastically. Manchitas, Chloe's yorkie, was dressed up as SanataClaus, and began to yap. After a few seconds of chaos, we began to trick-or-treat.

"Look! Let's go to that hill!" Gwen shouted hysterically.
We all shrugged, and began to walk towards the hill. "BEEP! BEEP!" We all turned around, and saw a  red, old, and very rusty pickup truck. I squinted, since the headlights were very bright, and saw an odd..."PUMPKIN!" I screamed, and with as much speed and strength my body had, I pushed everyone out of the way. The lights turned off, and the truck vanished into thin air. We all got up, and Jake looked at me and breathlessly whispered, "Thanks." Then.... "AAAAAAHHH!" Chloe screamed, and there it was, the pumpkin in the truck. The truck began to slowly drive. "Run!" I yelled, and we all began to run. The pumpkin began to speed up.

"Let's go to that mansion!" Jake hollered, and we all kept
sprinting until we got to the mansion. As we entered the eerie dwelling, the front doors closed, echoing throughout the house. I heard a little sob, and turned around to a frightened Gwen. "What's wrong, Gwen?" I asked, obviously concerned. Gwen's eyes slowly traveled up to mine. "I-I'm scared...." she murmurs. I hear a chuckle, and Jake walks up to Gwen, and softly touches her nose with his finger."There's nothing to fret about, sis. How about....we...." he begins, obviously tangled up in his own thoughts. I suddenly get an idea. "How about we play 'Hide and Seek'?" I burst out. Jake grins. "Yeah! Let's play 'Hide and Seek'!" he cries out. "No way!" Becca blurts out. We look at her. She keeps shaking her head.

"T-t-t-this h-h-house is h-haunted." she murmurs quietly,
But loud enough for us to hear. Everyone begins to laugh, and she glares at everyone. "I hope you don't come running to me for help." Jake shakes his head. "So who's gonna be it?" he asks. Complete silence. I sigh. "I'll be it." I blurt out mindlessly. Everyone nods. I go to the nearest wall and begin to count to 20. Once I'm done, I back away from the wall, and I feel something wet on my hands. I squint, since the lights are a bit dim. I realize that the strange liquid is...red? Could it be...blood? I gasp, and quickly wipe the blood on my leggings. This can't be possible.

I slowly climb up the stairs, each step making a creaking
sound. I shudder, feeling a bit frightened. I open a door, and there they are, Gwen and Jake, both grinning from ear to ear. I put my finger to my lips, and we start walking around, trying to find everyone else. I look behind a curtain, and find Caleb stifling a laugh. I roll my eyes, and try the next room, but I notice the doorknob wiggling and jiggling, and I slowly reach for the doorknob, and calmly open the doorknob. An alarmed and anxious Becca comes out running out. "GET THEM AWAY FROM ME! PLEASE! GET THEM AWAY FROM ME!" Becca pleads and screams, which is pretty deafening. Caleb takes her into his arms, and hugs her, whispering calming stuff into her ear.

I get up, and walk into the room. The first thing I see are candles
and bizarre, creepy carved pumpkins. I shiver and quickly walk out. Who would have such crazy and weird stuff in their house? Everyone looks confused, and I clear my thou and I call out, "Chloe? Where are you?" I hear Manchitas's bark and Chloe's familiar giggle, and I start rushing to the room where her giggling is coming from. I open the door, and Manchitas begins to bark, and I see it: another pumpkin. I look everywhere, and spot Chloe looking out the window. "Did I win, Alexandra?" she asks, and calmly turns around. I shriek; her eyes are completely black. She smiles, and looks at the pumpkin.

"Have you met my little friend?" she asks. Thoughts run
through my head. 'Do the pumpkins have a connection with the fact that Chloe is somewhat possessed?' I think. I don't waste time pondering; I run to the pumpkin, and attempt to to grab it, but it bites my hand. "OW!" I scream in pain, and forcefully throw the pumpkin at the wall. Chloe's eyes change back to their normal Amber color. Then, Manchitas limps to me, and notice his bloody back leg. Chloe gasps. "D-d-did I d-do this t-to y-you?" Chloe asks Manchitas. Manchitas starts barking and growling at Chloe. He looks at me and begins crying, so I pick him up. Chloe covers her eyes, and starts walking backwards. I see a pumpkin appear right behind her, and I notice the large, wide window. My eyes widen. " Chloe! Be careful with the pumpk-" Chloe trips over the pumpkin and her arms start flying everywhere, looking for something to hold on to. I reach for her hand, but it's too late; her body is already on the ground. I recognize this death like a common one in scary movies, but instead of ketchup and a plastic "dead" body, it's actual blood and Chloe. 'This is not a movie, a book, or even a story.' I repeat in my head over and over again.

Everyone walks in, crowding around me.
"Is that Chloe?" Jake asks. I nod slowly. "She...she hurt Manchitas...the pumpkins....she fell....
a-and.....she..." I don't feel the tears until they're sliding down my cheek. Jake hugs me,and our lips meet for a sweet kiss. He looks into my eyes. "I've always wanted to do that." he whispers. His face expression changes to a more serious/mature one, and he picks up Gwen and takes hold of my hand. "Time to leave this crazy madhouse," he mumbles. Caleb, Becca, and I follow him out the door. We walk down the stairs, skipping two at a time, until we stop at the front door, where Jake struggles with the doorknob. We all try to open the door, but it won't budge. "Children, did you think it would be that easy to leave this house?" a hair-rising, eerie voice says. The lights go out. I lose grip of Jake's hand, and Manchitas somehow disappears from my arms. "Jake?" I ask. From far away, I hear blood-curling screams, but where I am standing in the dark.....complete silence. "AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!" someone screams. "Becca? Caleb? Gwen? Jake? Manchitas?" I whisper. I feel a cold hand on my back, but since it's dark, I can't see this mysterious person. I hear this person laugh right in my ear. "Oh darling, I hate to say this, but..." he begins. I feel a sharp object being held at my neck. "You're next."
