Spooked

Bert and me were walking over to our favorite hang-out-after-a-ride spot near the round pen.

I always give Bert a very generous amount of lead rope, because he was so tame, and he actually would not walk anywhere unless you were right beside him.

So we were walking and a truck turned on behind us and startled Bert. He started trotting, but he went toward me. His hoof scraped against the back of my heel, which made me trip and fall as I was jogging to try to sliw him down a bit.

I fell and let go of the lead rope. I rolled about five feet away from Bert. After I stopped moving, I sat with my hands on the ground, staring down while I caught my breath. The experience had startled me, too.

Bert stopped and realized I was on the ground. He came over to me and stuck his head under my arm amd nudged my stomach softly. I rubbed his neck and told him I was okay.

I grabbed Bert's mane behind his ears and brought myself up as he raised his head.

This may sound weird, but Bert really did care about people. He made sure they were okay, and gave them "hugs" when they were crying or upset.
